Public Health Service) Washington, Sept. 28. UP—Young ehildren in school are gaining dis- tnct benefits from the increasingly cageful health supervision exercised by education and public health authorities. Because of their close association with each other in large groups, however, they are unavoidably ex- posed to ahumber of communicable diseases which may prove more dangerous to younger brothers and | sisters than to themselves. Many parents, Public Health Service officials have observed, | measles and |3 whooping cough as necessary evils. | Some, of course, know that these |\ seem to look ‘upon diseases are often fatal in infancy, but few appear to realize that, even after a child is two years old, an at- tack of either of these maladies may result in death. Every mother and father, health | § authorities assert, should realize that | it is not necessary to expose a child | to the danger of death from diph- theria when protection is available through the simple use of the toxin- (|[if§ anti-toxin mixture or the toxoid preparation. Smallpox, they say, can be similarly prevented by vaccina- | o tion, and means of controlling scar- let fever are being developed, while the use of serum obtained from con- valescents is lowering the mortality rate from mcasles. Children who have reached the | (g school age have had time to de- velop greater resistance to these “diseases than the youngsters of the two to five year group, but neverthe- less continue to need a reasonable amount of protection for some years. The precautions advised require the aid of physicians, but the pro- tection, of restless little boys and girls from accidental injury rests largely with the parents alone. The tragedy of the small child burned to death or dying from poison left | within reach falls annually upon more than 1,800 homes, and 1,000 in the 2.5 year group are killed each year in automobile accidents, emphasizing the necessity for con- tinuous vigilance on the part -of parents in the care, training and | g protection of their youngsters. OOLLEGE TOWN 5 (REATED ABR0AD ¢ Americans Form Regular Cam- pus City in France Fontainebleau, Sept. 28 —(M— Napoleon's favorite palace this sum. mer was an American college town. Three hundred students were at the American conservatory of music, housed in the Louis XV wing of the chateau and in the Pavillon du Titre. Villagers of Fontaineblcan and the little hamlets bordering the for- est look torward every year to the coming of the Americans. It makes a little “season” for them, fills the cafes and animates the streets. The town is dull after the departure of the officers of the military school quartered here in winter and until the students arrive. Two or three Fontainebleau res. |} taurants belonged to the students to all intents and flocked there in bands. When the weather was good and work slack they arranged excursions and pic nics in {he forest. Art and swimming were the chief preoccupations of the painting and sketching classes. Their work took | & them regularly afield. Thursdays, Fridays snd Baturdays, they drove in automobiles to Montigny, Moret or another nearby village, carrying canvases, sketch-pads, eascls and bathing suits. The Loing river was their favor- fte Lido. The students went there regularly during August. When the easels were set up. men and women donned bathing suits and went for || & plung in the Loing. They worked awhile in thelr dripping costumes and then tired of work, jumped into the Loing again. Although white rats usually have variety, with black eyes, haye been found in central France.
