FOUR HELD IN DEATH OF SOLDIER Sergeant Brannigan of Trenton Dies Following Fatal Brawl at South Norwalk, South Norwalk, Dec. 22.—Four young men, three of them of this city are under arrest charged with manslaughter following the death at the Norwalk hospital at noon today of Sergeant James Brannigan of 231 Garfield street, Trenton, N. J. Bran- nigan, who was stationed here as a sergeant instructor for Battery C, 192nd artillery, was taken to the hos- pital early: Wednesday morning suf- fering from a fractured skull, which he sustained in an early morning brawl. The four under arrest are Edward Sheehan, Frank De Martino and John Marron, all of this city, and Frank Gilbert of Denver, Colo. Shee- han had been held at first charged with felonious assault while the other three were charged with simple as. sault. An imminent death inquiry was held here yesterday by Coroner John J. Phelan which falled, to disclose who had assaulted Brannigan or the cause for the assault. Sheehan ad- mitted striking Brannigan with his first while other witnesses said that De Martino had used a weapon of some sort on Gllbert who was Bran- nigan’s companion. The inquiry was continued pending Brannigan's condi, tion. + Brannigan who was 47 year old is survived by a father, a brother, and a sister, all of Trenton. Clan Steamship Company, ‘Not Standard Oil, Wins London, Dec. 22.—A Centra] News dispatch from Edinburgh says that the Clan Line Steamship Co. and not the Standard Oil Co. as reported yes- terday was the successful party in an actlon «decided in the court of ses- sions in that city. The steamship company appealed from a previous decree which had awarded the Stand- ard Oil Co. a judgment of 97,890 pounds and costs, representing the value of a cargo shipped on the steamship Clan Gordon which sank on her way from New York to China. The action in the court of sessions yesterday reversed this decision. - TOYLAND ' Last Call on all Toys Friday and Saturday. Burns International Detective Agency, to recover $4,206.88, balance due the agency, it alleged, for services in cleunlng up the city of Bridgeport of vice and gambling conditions in 1920, The suit was brgught by the plain. tiff against John® Stanley, former president of the police commission, and former Mayor Clifford Wilson, of Bridgeport, it being alleged that they had promised to become personally responsible for the services of the detectives in case the city failed to make good. According to the com- plaint the total amount charged the city was $36,862,21 and the amount sted for was the balance it is alleged the city officials failed to pay. The plaintiff was represented by Toblas A. Keppler and Morton Abra- hams, while the defendants had the law firm of Loucks, Griffin, Connet & Cullen to look after thelr interest, The defense is that the detective agency was overpald for the services it did in rounding up evidence of members of the underworld, who, it was charged at the time, were linked with Prosecuting Attorney Delaney, ‘then holding office. Allen O. Myers, a detective con- nected with the Burns agency, said that the agency had been engaged to ‘clean up Bridgeport,” and that Mayor Wilson told him that Delaney was in league with the evildoers of the city. It appears that Mayor Wil- son was anxious to become governor of Connecticut and was after the scalp of the prosecuting attorney, who, it was alleged, was responsible for the conditions in Bridgeport. The witness swore that the agency at one time had as many as 756 de- tectives in Bridgeport, and that sev- eral were arrested, to fool those they were after. .
