In the meantime G.phlu Amund- ‘on has announced he. make a Briet visit to Norway,, th,:«h i BIRMINGHAM WILL OBSERVE a0 YEAR Celebratiion of City’s Anniver- sary to Last One Week Birmingham, Oct. ham's birthday party, celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of ‘the city, will be made an even greater qccasion through the first official visit of the President and Mrs. Harding to the south since the inauguration. The celebration will be featured by the historical pageant depicting the fifty years of the city’s history and stressing the fact that Birmingham is the largest city of its age in America, being the only city in the 200,000 class'which was founded after 1870, and one of the only few cities of its size which were not in existence dur- ing the Civil War. The celebration will continue throughout the entire week, October 24 to 29, but the biggest day will be Octoher 26, when President and Mrs. Harding will be the official guests of the city and state. Assurance has been given Senator Underwaod by the president that he will remain in Bir- mingham practically 24 hours and that he will participate in all the functions and. ceremonies which the committee has arranged in his honor. Arriving on a special train from ‘Washington at an early hour on the morning of October 26, the president will be ‘met at Pell City by a commit- tee of prominent citizens of Birming- ham and Alabama. Upon his arrival he will head the parade in which will participate practically all the civic, fraterral, patriotic, military and semi- military organizations of Birmingham and many from other cities. In addi- tion to the national guard units, there will be a guard of 1,000 members of the American Legion in uniform and a special guard of honor composed of veterans who were wounded overseas. The grandimarshal of thc parade will ‘be Brig. Gen. R. E. Steiner. Another feature of the parade will be the 67 young women representa- tives of the different counties of the state, 'selected for their beauty and popularity, each of whom will have an elaborately decorated automobile in the parade. The president will make thd 'principal formal address of the day in Capitol Park. A luncheon will be tendeéred him at the Tutwiller ho- tel where several hundred citizens will ba present. . During the afternoon, the president ‘will appear at three functions and will make short informal talks at each one. He will attend the inaugurgtion exer- cises of Birmingham-Southern college, where the degree of L.L.D., will be conferred upon him. The corner stone of the new $1,000,000 Masonic temple of Birmingham will be laid during the aftermeom and the president will make a .h' pddress.. Later, he will go to 14. — Birming- NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14, the dedication exercises of Underwood park which is .named in honor of the |senator from Alabama, at whose re- | quest President Harding is making the trip to Birmingham. At the formal banquet at the coun- try club in the evening, the president and Mrs. Harding will be the guests of honor and the affair will be at- tended by a large number of promi- nent women as well as men. The president will be introduced by the governor of Alabama, Thomas E. Kil- by. The ball which will follow and which concludes the programme for the visit of the president will be a notable social affair in the life of Bir- mingham and will be attended by prominent people from all over Ala- bama and adjoining states. The president and Mrs. Harding, as well as the other members of the presi- dential party, are expected to board their train for the return to Washing- ton shortly after midnight and the train will leave at an early hour on the morning of October 27. Four performances of the historical pageant will be staged in which 1,500 persons will participate and there will be a chorus of 500 trained voices. Sev- eral aundred dancers wili feature the presentation of the pageant. Massed bands and orchestras will provide such music 8s may be desired. MIDLAND, TEXAS, I GREAT PONY CENTER Little Town is Famous as Greatest Horse Shipping Depot in United States Midland, Texas, Oct. 14.—This “cow-town,” equidistant from El Paso and Fort Worth, also claims to be a polo pony town. It is said to be the greatest shipping depot for polo ponics in the United States. Figures are sub- mitted by men in the pony business to prove it. Polo ponies ridden in the big games in the north and east are Midland, raised horses—at least many of them. Two Midland bred ponies, Snal ahd Hackleberry Slim won first and second prizes in New York at the Meadow- brook club. In the international 1921 polo games in London, the American team won, and one of the ponies of the winning team, Lucky Strike, was a Midland product. Midland ships about 200 first class polo ponies every year to north- ern and eastern cities. G. O. Coyle, of Midland, said to be the heaviest shipper here, declares a good polo pony is born, not made. He said the best polo pony is one about 15 hands high, weighs between 950 and 1100 pounds, fast, and easily reined.
