New York, Oct. 14.—Another chap- ter of the. correspondence between President Harding and Mrs. Ella L. Fried concersing the coming confer- ence on limitation of armament was made public today by -“Miss Freed” who added that the president had mis- read her name which really is Mrs. Ella L. Fried. The president made public on Wed- nesday a letter in response to one from her in which he gave his first extended public outline of what he hoped to see achieved at the conference. Mrs. Fried said she had written a reply urging him to propose a reduc- tion by one-half of present armaments. The letter read: & “I asked you what you meant by ‘reasonable limitation.’ You say yeu mean ‘something practicable.” That is exactly the same thing you said before Classified advertisements get the business. If every one of the nations at the conference agrees to reduce its armament one-half, their relative strength would remain as great as before. That is clear, I hope. “Then why not suggest one-half reduction? When that has been done the women of the world will furnish suggestions as to what is reasonable and practicable.”’ Mrs. Fried, aged 28, lives in Pitts- burgh. Whitehead, nine, committed suicide here yesterday morning because = of jealousy over the arrival of a baby boy in his home. Jesse was found in PBishop mill pond in front of his home ten minutes after he jumped i, but Iis life could not be saved. Jesse's father died three years ago and the lad’s heart almost broke from grief. His widowed mother became Mrs. John W. Lewis and tw¢ months ago there arrived a-baby boy. Rela- tives-teased the lad until he ran away. Brought back against his will he ran away again, only to be found a sec- ond time. He has been despondent and said he would rather be dead than as he was. Yeasterday morning his. mother sent nim to the pond to empty a pan. The boy set the pan down on the bank and dived in. Mrs. Lewis, being sus- picious, followed, and found him head down in the mud. in four feet of water. IGNORES CHINA’S NOTE. Japan Does Not Take Country’s Re- Jjection of Proposal Seriously. the Chinese note rejecting her pro- posals relative to negotiations involv. ing the Shantung question according to most reliable information here. This would leave the position of Japan as it was following the presentation of the Tokio memorandum by M. Oba- ta, Japanese minister here in Septem- ber. % It is declared that Japan expects China will attempt to bring the Shan- tung problem before the Washington conference but Tokjo is relying upon the solid support of the signatories to the Versailles treaty in opposing such a move, because if China’s claims were recognized, it is asserted, other non-signatory nations would be en- couraged to protest against clauses’ distasteful to them, and thus the treaty might be invalidated. Japan expects her.stand in this matter will leave Shantung open to future direct nego- tiations with China. 2 Because of the many positions in which they must work, tractor motors are tested at angles up to 45 degrees. — FOR Peking, Oct. 14. — (By Associated Press)—Japan is inclined to ignore 70 RENT—5 room tenement; all improve- ments. 217 Chestnut' St., rear; also § rooms on City Ave. Apply Frank Nair, 553 Main St. 10-8-12d TO RENT—Main St. store; also office rooms; best location in the city.
