State Representative Bernie C. Papy will throw the switch to make the conversion complete and Mayor C. B. Harvey will put through the first call from the telephone company. The dial conversion highlights 69 years of telephone service in | Key West with more expansion and improvement by the Southern Bell Telephone Company expected in the future. Chet Cold, Southern Bell Manager in Key West, said that over $1,000,000 was spent here on central office equipment, outside plant and buildings in the past two years to effect the conversion. Additional improvement of equipment and service is slated to be carried.on in the future, so that all who desire service in the area can be accommodated. > The Citizen is pleased to print for its readers’ enjoyment a special edition commemorating the conversion of the Key West telephone system to dial operation. Our congratulations are extended on the occasion of Southern Beil’s completion of its elaborate dial system for our community. We are pleased that Bell has recognized our community as worthy of such a tremendous expenditure as was necessary to place dial phones in our homes. We are even more pleased that in so doing they have expressed a faith that our community will’ con- tinue to grow and prosper—that it is a place where private enter- prise can take the chance of huge investments with the expecta- tion of a fair return.
