Coalman Can Charge More For Coal Now By SAM DAWSON NEW YORK (®—-The coalman has the go-signal now to charge more for coal—if he can get it, And the high cost of living may have found another willing helper in its determination to stay high, There’s some doubt, especially among his competitors, that the coal operator can pass along in higher prices all of the increased costs implied by President Tru- man’s approval Wednesday night of a full coal wage boost of $1.90 a day. Because of the growing compe- tition in the heating and power fields from fuel oil, diesel oil and natural gas, industry sources doubt if many soft coal operators can make a price hike of any size stick. . Hard coal prices, however, are close to price ceilings now, and may go higher because of the pres- ident’s overruling of the Wage Sta- bilization Board. Steel mill costs are sure to go up. Steel companies themselves mine vv | much of the coal they use in large quantities in making steel. And their mining costs will mount. While the approval of the full wage boost was widely expected by the business community, there’s some doubt among industry lead- ers whether the President's deci- sion removes the last of the big over wage and price hikes or may be just the signal of another round of them. The maritime union wage boosts are still before the Wage Stabiliza- tion Board for approval or paring. And the board has -already cut back pay hikes negotiated by other unions. These might now feel their cases should be reopened. The President insists that his decision does not mean a new wage control policy. And Defense Mobilizer Fowler says the whole control policy for wages, prices and materials is to be maintained until the new administration takes over next month. Some .ndustry leaders, however, wonder if the coal case, may not turn out to be the swan song for a | control system that has been weak- ening steadily for some time. ‘The. coal mining industry ap- parently feels that it can—or must —handle the increased costs of the higher pay scales, since it had agreed to them and asked the wage board to approve them. 7 Users of coal, with industrial production high and demand of their products strong, seem willing to pay higher coal prices rather jthan face a coal shutdown. As labor costs have mounted in recent years, the ‘coal operators have turned increasingly to mech- anization of mines. A miner, using these modern devices, can turn out considerable more coal today than he could only a few years ago. This has helped the coa: opera- tors keep prices at a competitive level with other fuels. Costs of producing and trans- porting the competing fuels have gone up, too, The price of fuel oil and heavy oil used by industry has \been held down, in fact, by the price of coal. Each acts as a brake lon the other, since many factories are equipped to shift quickly from |one fuel to the other if prices get out of line, The high cost of living seems j likely to stay higher than you like for quite a spell yet. People in the Marquesas Islauds | of the Pacific hunt wild cattle with | barpoons, says the National Geo- i graphic Society. nevS-#f need not be too hurt.
