Since 1922, each Pres- ident of the United States has pro- claimed the week containing Oct- ober 9th, the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, as Fire Pre- vention Week. It lasts through Sat- urday, Oct. 11. Fire Chief Harry M. Baker of the Naval Base Fire Department said that this is the only time during the year that the necessity for Fire Prevention ‘is brought before the public by the National Fire Protection Associa- tion. “Daily though, we read, we see, and we hear of the many fire dam- ages, deaths and losses that are sweeping this great country and that in itself should be a remind. er of the vital need for fire pre- | vention, the duty of every citizen, ;no matter where he lives. It’s not just a matter of checking your pro- jperty and homes for fire hazards |during Fire Prevention Week, but it should be a constant reminder [to you to remain ever alert, to | safeguard not only your lives and |homes, but those of your neigh- | bors. You should always keep in mind that fire depends on three factors: | 1+ A substance that will burn 2 ~ Enough heat 3 - Enough oxygen ,“A substance that will burn can sometimes be removed from a fire, torney's fees and court costs plus| ut most fires have to be extin- up to three times-the overcharges | Suished by reducing the heat, or during the year just before the | cutting off oxygen,” Baker cau- suit ig filed or $150.00, whichever | tioned is greater, Or, you can turn your} Fire Prevention experts have , First Stake Driven For $1,624,642 Fleet Echoci Bidg. Other readers complain “We use the best grade of XYZ paint (nam- ing a most reliable brand) and now it is cracking and washing off in less than a year.” If you put too much paint over too much old paint until you have a sort of an egg shell built up | around your house, something is ‘going to crack. Of course, moisture in wood is , the No. 1 enemy of 2 paint job op a new house. If moisture gets in- to exterior wills through struc- tural defects which admit rain snow, fog or dew, you're bound to have paint trouble. If moisture gets in fror water vapor created within the house from cooking, bathing, laundering, or even breath- ing, you’re headed for nore troub- le. (We are not advising you to stop breathing.) Flashing and chalking of all ex- ‘erior joints and cracks com | the only bulwark against the ther. Vapor barriers on or inner walls to stop indoor moist: | ur before it can condense in the | outer wood are the only weapons for that front. American Builder, trade publica- tion of builders, recently obser- ved: ; “When the sum strikes the sur- | face of the wood, it tends to draw |out the moisture faster than such | vapor can pass through the paint film.” There are so many causes of paint failures that the Forest Pro- ducts Laboratory has spent more than 15 years testing various types of paint exposed at Madison, Wis. These tests have indicated a wide- spread t-ndency to repaint houses too often an¢ with too much paint at one time. ALLIGATORING and _ scaling, cross-grain cracking and curling have resulted from paint coats that are too thick. An easy test for thickness is to compare the edge of a chip of the old paint with the edge of a comparatively new dollar bill under a magnifying glass. If the paint chip looks thick- er any new coats applied can build up trouble. The Forest Products Laboratory recommends spreading a gallon of paint over 800 square feet if the old chip is as thick or thicker than a dollar bill. I* the old paint ap- pears to be only half as thick, a gallon may te spread over only 600 feet. If the old paint is thinner and some bare wood is exposed on nearly all parts of a wall, two new coats can be used-a primer spread | at 600 square feet to the gallon and | a finish coat at 700 or more. The attitude of manufacturers ; of quality paint coincides with the | verdict of the Forest Products Lab- oratory. | The National Paint, Varnish and | Lacquer Association observes: “The checking or alligatoring to | the application of relatively hard | finishing coats. over soft priming or underlying coats.
