LXXIH, No, 237 The Key West Citisen McGovern Of Amberjack Is Seriously Injured As Car Crashes Into K 1951 MERCURY IS A TOTAL LOSS; WAS ON WAY TO MIAMI Lee P. McGovern, 22, USS Amberjack ‘was seriously in- jured early this morning and his car smashed completely when he lost control of his 1951 Mercury and crashed into the concrete wall of the Saddle Bunch No. 4 viaduct. McGovern was rushed to the U. S. Naval hospital im- mediately after the accident at 5:35.a.m. He is in serious condition with probable brain concussion, dislocated left hip, cuts and abrasions. He was treated by Dr. J. H. Cheffey, USN. The Mercury, declared a total loss by Sugar Sweeting, whose wrecker brought it back to Key West, had almost every conceivable Wind of damage to the front and right hand sides. The entire crank shaft was knock- @@ out of the car by the impact of the accident. The windshield was splintered, The front end of the car was twisted around and the right front door and window smash- ed. The steering wheel was bent and crumpled. ‘ The smashed car blocked traffic on the bridge until Sweeting’s tow- ed it back to town. Florida High- way Patrolman Marvin J. Wilder directed traffic and supervised ar- * ‘pangements at the scene of the ac- cident. McGovern was on his way to Mi- ami. His registration papers show that his address is Route 1, Dover, Ohio, Another accident occurred late yesterday afternoon when a sailor tried to stop at the South Toll gate, skidded and ran into the rear of another car, The brand new 1952 Ford incurred about $300 to $400 damage, Sugar Sweeting said. The Key West Yacht club hopes to start construction of its club- house in the near future, Com- modore Glynn Archer said today. At a luncheon meeting at Curry and Sons where the club meets pen- ding construction of its own build- ing, members discussed plans for the new structure. Contractor Edward Ambler pre- sented some plans of his own de- sign for the building. Other con- tractors will be asked along with Ambler to submit bids once the de- sign is agreed upon by members, “We haven’t been able to decide yet just what type of building we want,” Archer said. ‘The land. is filled but that is as far as we have gotten to date.” Yacht club members are thinking of enlarging the filled area out near Hilton Haven by 50 feet.
