LXXIII, Britain Exploded First Atomic Bomb No. 236 Today Off Au stralia Becomes Third Nation To Have Deadly A-Bomb Weapon PERTH, Australia ) — Britain exploded her first atomic weapon successfully today at the deserted ello Islands off Northwest A London newspaper gives Prime Minister Churchill the “trump” he needs to reopen exchange of atom secrets with the United States. The “setting sun” flash and boil- ing atomic cloud, seen 65 and more miles away on the mainland, her- alded Britain's “‘coming of age” as the third world power to possess a | deadly atomic weapon. It was the world’s 37th recorded atomic ex- plosion. The United States has exploded 33 atomic weapons—two of them in World War II over Japan and the rest in tests—and so far as is known there have been three atom- tc explosions in Russia. Dispatches received here at the state capital of Western Australia said the British weapon went off at 8 a. m, today (7 p. m., Thurs., EST), Deepest secrecy shrouded the nature of the weapon. Reporters who saw the blast from: a 3,000-foot lookout on the mainland, 65 niles from the center of the restricted test area, said the initial orange-red flash was far less intense than had been expected. ‘There was speculation that thi was: because British scientists had devised a new detonating trigger whieh did not require as much fis- sionable material, ‘The. observers heard two distinct explosions—one presumably the priming charge and the second the main blast. English Classes In Football Team Will Face Tougher Foes In Future, Warns O’Bryant In Talk Key Westers should not be too |discouraged if the football team loses two or three of its fortheom- ing games, the Rotary Club was told yesterday by Superintendent of Schools Horace O’Bryant. Mr. O'Bryant spoke to the club in the absence df the scheduled speaker, Win Jones, athletic dir- ector of Key West High School. He gave a brief resume of the strong points ofsthe Key West team as shown in the first two games of this season, but he also told of strong opposition the team faces in the future as reported by scouts who have watched the other teams play. Lake ‘Worth, whom Key West faces in its next game on October 10 here, has a team of small but tough men. They hit like bullets, Mr. O’Bryant said, and they are well-coached. Seacrest, a future oponent, is also strong with a hefty backfield. In order to combat such strength, the Key West football mentors are striving to train our boys in the fine points of a passing attack. The gist of Mr. O’Bryant’s speech was that although Key West has a good ball club which is acquitting itself well the boys are not suppos- ed to win all their games. They just shouldn't be expected to. Mr. O’Bryant also announced that a running audit is being kept on the athletic aecount by Orvis Kemp, C.P.A. here. Heavy expenses are incurred in the running of the foot- ball games, and all ‘figures are available for examination. Mr. O'’Bryant added to his talk a reminder to the Rotary Club that Failing To Appear In Court Costs Three Men $100 Each; Fines Given| Today For Traffic Cases| Light fines and one sentence were imposed in guilty plea ses- siop of Criminal court today by Judge Thomas Caro. Only yesterday, William R. Redus, of the Nav Air Station was sentenced to nine months in the County Jail after he was found nude in the bedroom of a Caroline street couple. According to the police. report,, patrolman Herman Conley was dis- patched to the Charles street ad- dress shortly before one o'clock to investigate a reported prowler on the, complaint of Mrs. Lois Dim- mick, whose apartment he tried to enter. Conley said that a search of the premises revealed the sailor cow- e in a hall . He was com- ly nude, the officer said. Conley arrested the man and took him to the city jail, where he was charged with disorderly con- duct, to wit: attempted breaking and entering; trespassing on pri- vate property and indecent expos- ure.
