REFERS TO STANDARD OIL Former President Will Also Challenge Knox’s Statement That Certain Let ters Were Intended to “Put the Reo erd Straight.” Oyster Bay, N. Y., Aug. 28.—Colonet Roosevelt desires to bring the names of Alton B. Parker, Democratic nomé mee for the presidency in 1904, and James S. Sherman, vice president of the United States, into the inquiry inte eampaign contributions authorized by the senate by the adoption of the Pem rose resolution. He said he would place their names before the senate committee in his letter to Senator Clapp. This letter, upon which Colonel Roosevelt now ia at work, will embody some of the things to which he would have testi fied before the committe, had it grant ed him a hearing. “I shall include in my letter to Sem ator Clapp,” the colonel said, “the letter which I wrote to Judge Parker in 1904, and my letter to Jim Sher man on the Harriman contribution. 1! think they are pertinent to the inquiry and I want to get them in the record.” The letter to Judge Parker, to which Colonel Roosevelt recently has made reference several times, was in reply to Judge Parker’s charge that Roose velt’s campaign fund had been en riched’ by a contribution of $100,008 from the Standard Oil company. The charge was made and the reply writ. ten in the height of the campaign of 1904. Refers to Harriman Donation. The letter to Mr. Sherman gave the Roosevelt version of the Harriman Roosevelt controversy over a contri bution by the late E. H. Harriman ot $260,000 to the Republican campaign fund of 1904. | Nor will the alleged assertion of Philander C. Knox, now secretary ot state, that Colonel Roosevelt’s letters of Oct. 26 and 27, 1904, and his tele gram of Oct. 29, 1904, to George B. Cortelyou “were written for the ree | ord,” go unchallenged. Cloonel Roose | velt said: | “Mr. Knox may have heard me say, | "These letters will put the record straight’ or ‘This will establish a rec : ord of my attitude;’ but it is certainly not to be inferred from this remark, (I don’t say that I did make, but I may have) that they were written solely for the record. They were genuine letters and expressed just what I wanted to express when I first heard of the report that the Standard Oil had contributed, or wanted to con tribute to my campaign.” EMBEZZLEMENT IS CHARGED Whereas, a petition has been presented to the Board of County Commission- ers of Itasca County, Minnesota, asking that said Board shall cause to be sur- veyed, located and staked out all section and property lines pretaining to Section 24, township 55, range 27 Itasca County, Minnesota.
