B—2 Sl New Floor Finish, Waterproof, Will Redo Them for Good * Air Register Filters Keep Rooms and Their Furnishings Clean By DOROTHY DUCAS AND ELIZABETH GORDON A floor finish which is easy to apply, but which won't turn white it water is spilled on it and does not have to be removed if you decide to refinish your floors, has been devel- oped just in time for spring re- doing of floors. The new finish is another of those popular “penetrating” wood finishes which do not lie on the surface but sink into the wood fibers. It is slightly more viscous or sticky than the average varnish, but easily ap- plied with a brush, mop or rag. You put it on with or without a wood filler, let it set about half an hour, wipe the surface with a clean cloth, then leave it to dry overnight. Next morning, rub it up with steel wool, add a second coat and again polish with steel wool. Sometimes the sec- ond coat can be omitted. Of course, if your floors already have another kind of finish you will have to scrape them and start afresh. But once this has been done it need not be re-done. You can even retouch worn places without doing the entire floor, if certain parts become scuffed from traffic. The finish reacts with slight dif- ferences to various kinds of wood, Just as other penetrating finishes do, but in general the color produced is about the same as is obtained with white shellac. If this is too light for your taste, an oil stain can be mixed with the first coat to darken it. The finish is hard wearing, and the natural wood grain is enhanced and highly lighted by the. finish. Made of oils and new synthetic resins it binds the wood fibers to- gether and waterproofs them, be- coming & part of the wood itself. The new finish costs about $1.25 a. quart, $3.75 a gallon, and its cover- ing capacity is about 600 square feet to the gallon. It is useful on wood- work, panelling and cabinets, as well &5 on floors. * % ok % Filters Keep Room Clean. Since this is the time of the year when you will be calling in your heating man to have your furnace cleaned out and put in condition for next fall, it is a good time to con- sider some of those minor improve- ments which are easily made by your heating contractor while he is in your house doing the cleaning Job, One of these improvements for the home heated by a warm air sys- tem is a new air register shield and filter for each of the registers sup- plying warm air to the rooms. They cost very little—59 cents a piece for wall model shields, $1.19 for floor models, 25 cents each for filters— but you will bless them next fall when they save your curtains and draperies from being soiled by grime, dust or soot emanating from the furnace. The filter and shield fit right over the top or room surface side of the warm air register, without necessi- tating the removal of the register. ‘They look like metal screens but are specially treated crinoline. The fioor model stands up from the surface of the floor about five inches, so it won'’t be walked on. When the filter becomes clogged with dirt, just re- move the filter (without removing the shield) and vacuum it, or else with & brush tap and brush it lightly. The shields and filters are adjust- able so they will fit any register. ‘There is always one edge of the reg- ister exposed, to insure unlmpededi flow of warm air. Better look into this now and be ready for next fali, lest, by that time, you forget. * X %k % Gravity Ash Removal. While we are on this subject of heating improvements, we want to report the latest shertcut to freedom from service at the furnace—gravity ash removal. Most people who do not balk at the job of shoveling coal on the fire protest loudly at the problem pre- sented by ashes. Shoveling of ashes is generally agreed to be about the biggest nuisance around the house. Well, if you install an ash receiver, or ash pit under the furnace or boiler, you can do away with all but the emptying of the receptacle once every two to four days, in the aver- age-sized home. The ash receiver, a watertight steel container made in one piece, into which the ash can is placed, can be installed either with new or old equipment, with stoker or hand- fired heaters, using any kind of fuel that will pass through the grates. In other words, most bituminous coal-fueled heaters can't use the ash recelver with utmost success be- cause the clinkers formed by this 6902 GLENDALE ROAD CHEVY CHASE, MD. “THE HAMLET” . $12,950 One of the most attractive homes in this_select new section of Chavy Chase, Md. NA. 9300 of Hallock & Herring. kind of coal usually will not pass through the grates. L The theory is merely this: ashes will fall through to an ash receiver if there is one of sufficient size un- der the fire bed; they can stay there safely until the ash recetver is full, when it is easily and quickly re- moved, emptied and replaced. The ash can is out of sight at all times; no ash shoveling, no mess, no dust. Why, if it is as simple as all this, wasn't it thought of long ago? It was. But before now, the construc- tion of an ash pit was an expensive, tedious custom-made job. It meant brick or concrete wall construction under the heater, and dependence on a heating contradipr’s ability in designing. Now the receiver comes made to it either furnaces or boll- ers, with the one limitation of very large warm-air furnaces, where the casing of the furnace sometimes im- pedes the lid of the ash receiver. Since the dream of most house- holders is a completely automatic heating system, requiring no atten- tion at all, the as® receiver seems to us a nice beginning toward nuisance-free heat. It costs approxi- mately $20 uninstalled. Even if you handle your own coal and ashes, you can get rid of the ash and fly ash nuisance. That’s something. * * ok X For further information about products described here, write the Misses Ducas and Gordon, 230 West Forty-first street, New York City, and inclose stamped, self-addressed envelope. Claritying Washington’s land rec- ords is part. of the job undertaken by the administration workers. Many deeds on property in this city were drafted in foreign juris- dictions due to land ownership by persons living abroad who had their deeds drawn by lawyers in other lands. These deeds had to be trans- 2Y2 baths. 6600 Wisconsin Ave.' of fumiture; large living room, fumiture, full basement with on Chase Ave. to house, AURORA HILLS DWELLING—This new home at 2406 Fort Scott drive, Aurora Hills, Va., has been purchased by Lt. and Mrs. A. B. Leggett, U. 8.N,, from J. 8. Buck through the real estate office lated and properly recorded by the e American workers. In one deed an Indian transferred a piece of prop- erty to another Indian. The grantor signed his name by drawing a pic- ture of a tortoise, and the grantee drew a picture of a snake as his signature. More than 2,123 land records have been abstracted and made readable from libers or record books date back grants by English kings. Project workers have copied 107,215 pages of these old libers. Indexing System Changed. Eighteen months ago project workers in the recorder of deeds’ office inaugurated a new system of indexing records of all 1:nd trans- actions in this city since the be- ginning of the century. The turn of the century was used as a starting point because most real estate changes hands at least once during 40 years, and from the rec- ords of these transactions an index to the ownership of most of Wash- ington’s real .property may be ob- tained. The new method involves the indexing of libers containing copies of original deeds keyed by the names of property owners and former property owners and sup- plemented by the card index rec- ords, which are filed according to lot and square numbers by admin- istration workers. <The two sys- tems make it possible for an inter- ested person to obtain information on a piece of property even if he has but a slight knowledge of that property. He need .only know the location of the property or the name of any one who has owned it in the course of the last 40 years. It is a legal requisite for the office of the recorder of deeds to main- tain bound libers recording the own- ership of land in Washington, though this type of recosfing been ‘used by that office, the lbers were not properly indexed, and tedi- ous searches were necessary to get the information in the records, The Rhodesian government is taking over private air services and will operate them.
