Capital Store Sales. Up 65 Per Cent During Week Sharp Spurt Carries Volume 9.3 Per Cent Above Year Ago By EDWARD C. STONE. Some striking increases in weekly | G sales in Washington department stores are revealed in today's re- port from the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. 3 Sales for the week ended May 4 ‘were 9.3 per cent ahead of the week ended May 6, 1939, the report said, and 65.7 per cent above the sales record of the previous week this year. . Furthermore, department stores sales in the Capital for the four- week period ending May 4 were 6.6 per cent better than in the like period a year ago. The rise of more than 65 per cent in Washington in the week under review, com- pared with the previous week, was | Amer partly due to special sales, the re- view said. In the whole fifth district sales for the week ended May 4 were 12 per cent better than last year, up 30 per cent over the previous week this year and 6. per cent higher in the four-week period than a year ago. Baltimore reported a weekly gain of 17 per cent over last year, 4.7 per cent over the previous week and 46 per cent over the corre- sponding four weeks in 1939. A group of other cities registered a weekly gain of 12 per cent over last year and a four weeks’ gain of 11 per cent, the Richmond bank said. Home Loans Best Since 1931. Savings and loan associations in advancing $228,834,000 in new home mortgage loans in the first three months of this year topped all previous quarterly lending records since 1931, it was announced today | I by officials of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board. The volume of new loans in the first quarter of this year was 222 per cent greater than in the same period of -1939 and 21.8 per cent more than in the first quarter of 1937, the previous peak. In March associations extended $00,368,000 in loans, a gain of 26 per cent over February and 23 per cent over March, 1939. The March activity surpassed the average for any month since 1931.
