REAL ESTATE. " APRIL 57, 1940. REAL ESTATE. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, SATURDAY, Springbrook Will Open o o, P A ATl brook’s rolling terrain is marked by around the various plots, adding an informal touch. In introducing Springbrook, George J. Moss, president of the company, For the ; Ailing House By ROGER B. WHITMAN., Q. I have soft wood floors in my bedrooms, and on moving the beds the casters make deep marks. Can this be prevented? A. Casters for furniture used on soft wood floors should have rollers of felt, or some similar soft com- position; the rollers should not be metal or hardwood. Casters with felt rollers can be had at large hard- ware stores or from the mail-order houses. Red Sandstone Walls. Q. I am planning to build a house, one wing of which will be of red sandstone. One of my friends sug- gests a stone veneer of 6 or 8 inches. Another suggests solid walls of 12 inches furred with 2x2-inch strips. My concern is freedpm from damp- ness in the interior of the house. Which type of construction would you advise? A. A furred cut solid stone wall s satisfactory, but my preference is for veneered wall construction. The additional air space, sheathing boards and sheathing paper in a| veneer construction make a wall | more resistant to weather and dampness. Old Brass Warming-Pan. Q. Is there some way to shine up an old brass warming-pan, and then put something on it to pre- vent tarnishing? A. If the brass is badly tarnished, | wash with ordinary vinegar in which | salt has been dissolved—as much | salt as will be taken up. Follow | by rinsing with clear water and| then wipe dry. If necessary, follow by a good metal polish. After pol- ishing, wipe the surface with ben- zine, being extremely careful of fire, and then apply a coat of clear lacquer. A plating shop could prob- ably do a much better job for you,‘ and at no great cost. Inquire at| your nearby garage. Care of Venetian Blinds. A reader sends in the following suggestion: “The original finish of Venetian blinds can be preserved by an application of paste wax rubbed on and then polish. This preserves the finish against stains from rain in the summer and provides a smoother surface, which can be| dusted more easily.” | Caution: Do not let any of the 'wax get on the tapes, as it will leave s stain that will be difficult to re- move. Condensation on Floor. Q. The floor of a dining room | 48 about 4 feet below the ground | level; the floor is tile laid over eoncrete. The problem is that on humid days in warm weather the base of the walls and floor are wet with condensation. Advice is asked on the possibility of preventing the | eondensation. A. A wood floor stuck down over | be sized first, of course. BEAUTIFUL KENT HOMEMr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hurley have purchased this large home at 4944 Lowellestreet N.W. from Mrs. Mildred. W. In finishing the Inside of a summer cabin, I plan to attach panels and composition board di- rectly to the studding. Would it be wise to put tar paper underneath? A. Rather than tar paper I should prefer to use heavy roofing felt, for it is not so brittle. This lining will make the walls more wind-proof and be a protection against moisture. “l'l 33rd Sl. N. The living room and lower bed- room need papering. The old paper is quite smooth and tight. Must I remove it, or can the new paper be stuck on over it? A. Yes, you can apply new paper over the old, providing the old pa- per is in good condition and is on tightly. The old paper will have to There is | always the slight chance that the 1paste for the new paper may strike | through and loosen the paste of the & damproofed floor should prevent eondensation. Mop the floor with s liquid tar or asphalt; then put down a layer of heavy asphalt satu- rated felt, overlapping the sheets half their width, and cementing the overlaps with liquid tar or asphalt. | ‘The wood floor is then stuck down ‘with an asphalt mastic cement. Re- Nable flooring contractors are fa- miliar with this method of laying ‘wood floors. ‘Wallpapering. Q. My summer cottage is about New Center Hall old paper, in which case both old and new papers may fall off. Repainting a House. Q. Eight years ago I had my house painted. Wooden shingles all around. The mixture was composed of white lead, linseed oil, turpen- tine and color in oil, also dryers. I expect to have it painted again.
