REAL ESTATE. Tilelike Board Makes Modern Wall Covering Comes in Colors And Without Scoring For Panel Use By DOROTHY DUCAS and ELIZABETH GORDON. Modern walls in kitchen and bath- room commonly are made with a shiny-surfaced, colorful board, which goes under the name of “tile- board.” That is because it is avail- able and popular in a scored-off pattern which looks like glazed tile. But this same material can be used for the surfaces of walls in kitchens and bathrooms without the scoring. . Indeed, many interesting treatments are possibie without un- broken surface—horizontal panels, plain walls above scored-off wain- scotings, contrasting colored large panels running from ceiling to floor. ‘We bring the matter up because we have been looking at some de- signs for bathrooms and Kkitchens suggested by one maker of this kind of board. One, a bathroom, is treated with pale green and peach vertical panels with chromium molding strips. Very good looking. Another uses black horizontal panels for the lower part of a wall behind a re- cessed tub, with white panels of the same size on the upper part of the walls. Some of these horizontal panels have scoring on them—indentations of contrasting color, usually black or white—but they run horizontally, not in squares. Sometimes the scor- ing lines are at regular distance all the way up the wall; others are made with a series of three lines every two feet or so. You'd be sur- prised how unusual and handsome the effect is. The board has a lustrous water- proof finish which is not damaged by steam, hot water, fruit juices, fats or oils, household acids or alco- holic beverages. It feels just like tile. And it comes in 16 standard colors, which include lively rich shades of yellow, red, blue, purple, green and buff. You can get the usual scored-off tile effects, too, of course. New Paint for Masonry. Perhaps your house doesn't need | a new coat of paint this spring. Yes, | of course, you would like to put a fresh face on it, change the color | scheme perhaps, do something to make it perk up and face the sum- mer and winter ahead. But the paint you put on last year, or the year before, looks all right. Only some- thing is wrong; something has been | overlooked. Could it be the chimney? Could it be the foundation walls? Paint for these two masonry parts of a frame House is of different kind than | that used on wood. Maybe last time the house was painted you forgot | about getting masonry paint and making the chimney and foundation | ‘walls as clean and bright as the rest | of the house. And maybe these forgotten parts of the house spoil the whole effect. But luck is with you. You can do the two neglected parts this year, when the walls themselves do not | need painting. There is a new resin paint made expressly for outside use over masonry materials. It is in- expensive, easily mixed with cold water, usually does the job with one | coat, can withstand the weather with the best of them. It may also be! THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. This new paint, which brings the popular member of the paint family, resin, outdoors, can be used over cement block, concrete, brick, sand- finish plaster, stone, unglazed hollow tile, asbestos siding and stucco. It comes in white and in eight colors: Ivory, cream, buff, tannish brown, light blue, gray, light green and brick red. It is made as a paste which is thinned with water so that one gallon, costing about $2.75 or $3, makes one and one-half gallons, to be applied with a large brush or sprayer. There is no reason why masonry parts of a frame house should be neglected. Cheap paints for these surfaces sometimes have been in- efficient in coverage. Good paints often required a good deal of pre- paratory treatment of surfaces, such as acid washing, sand blasting, siz- | ing and priming. But a resin ex- terior paint covers well, dries under normal conditions in about an hour and can be applied to a wall which | is merely brushed or wasned down to a surface free from loose par- ticles and oil or grease, How is your chimney? How are your foundation walls? And inci- dentally how is your brick or stucco house? Material and Budget Meet. Flashing, that necessary part of a | well-built house, which carries off the rain so it won't leak through walls, is -available today, inexpen- | sively, in lead. That is news to many people who have believed that lead flashing is a medium for expensive residences only. But it demonstrates the fact | we have been heralding for a long ime, that manufacturers, through | the last 10 years and more, have been experimenting to bring mate- rials within reach of modest budgets, so that we can get old materials in new and cheaper form today than ever before in housing history. With lead it was done through the development of hard lead, which is pure lead alloyed with between 6 and 712 per cent antimony. And an increased use .of lead has brought down its cost a pound. Lead flashing has certain advan- tages: It is easily worked and formed into the wide variety of shapes and designs necessary for proper flashing of windows, doors, roofs and chimneys. It resists cor- rosion and does not stain adjacent masonry or paint whenever rain water runs down from the lead to the other surfaces. Hard lead chimney caps are es- pecially popular. Chimneys are vul- nerable parts of any house and de- terioration due to weather can set in at the top of a chimney when moisture penetrates its joints. Base flashings and chimney caps of lead are not expensive. They can be in- stalled by any sheet-metal worker or building contractor. The caps make a metal top for the chimney, like the ferrule of a walking stick, except that there are openings to | let out the smoke. | Lead also can be used for um- | brella roofs over entrance doors, window and side wall flashings and for linings of hanging wood gutters.
