Nature’s Children Jumping Spider (Family attidae) By LILLIAN COX ATHEY. Almost anywhere is home for the bright - colored jumping spiders. These spiders are rather small, having a short body and sturdy legs finished with tarsal claws. You become aware of their presence, as & rule, by having one or more leap | into the air before you as you ap- proach either a plant, fence, log, or even the side of a building upon which some of them had been resting. No other spider has such | conspicuous eyes. All members of the family may be identified by the | characteristic arrangement of them | ®s well as the relative size of the| different pairs. They are in three rows. The anterior eyes are large | and are on the vertical face; the anterior median eyes are very large; the posterior median ones are small eyes and in front of the posterior lateral eyes, and as these jumpers are day workers, their eyes are the diurnal type. While the sexes differ greatly in color and clothing, they are almost the same size, which is unusual. During courtship days the males, who possess strange littlz bunches of hairs on their front legs, put on nuptial dances before their lady loves, In some fashion they manage to display their leg ornaments by holding their legs over their heads or swinging them sideways.
