Bs the Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 26.—The bond market lacked vitality to move far in either direction today, with trading at a slow pace in all groups. Going into the final hour there were more fractional losses than gains, with many ordinary active loans holding unchanged from Thursday’s close. In sharp contrast to the vacillating behavior of most corporates was a quick runup in Union Pacific liens following reports the carrier planned refunding of $85,000,000 in 4 and 5 per cent bonds at lower interest rates. Union Pacific 3'2s of '70 and 3155 of '71 each rose a point or more. Lower priced rails, helped earlier this week by hopes of favorable legislation in Congress, displayed little resistance to mild pressure. Trimmed fractions were such loans as Baltimore & Ohio stamped convertibles, Nickel Plate 41,s, New York Central 5s and Rock Island General 4s of '88. Erie General 6s countered the trend with a sizable gain and Ana- conda Copper 4!;s and Third Ave- nue adjusted 5s of '60 moved up. Most Japanese bonds improved in the foreign list. Balancing such gains were losses in Italian and British Empire issues. The market for United States Governments brightened a bit and gains ranging to around 1 were scored. Record Maryland Turkey Production Forecast By the Associated Press CENTERVILLE, Md., April 26— A record production of turkeys in Maryland this year was forecast to- day as the Eastern Shore Turkey Growers’ Association met to hear | experts discuss phases of the in- dustry that brought $1,375,000 to the State’s growers last year. In a prepared address, Dr. Morley A. - Jull, head of the University of Maryland's poultry department, pre- sented figures indicating a record 1940 production and urged producers to “take cognizance” of “certain pos- sibilities” affecting the 1940 outlook. “The turkey industry in Maryland is a very important one, since in 1939 it yielded an income of approxi- mately $1,375,000 te turkey growers,” Dr. Jull said. “One of the outstanding problems | of the Maryland turkey grower is to | reduce the average size of his breed- ing stock,” since it had been estab- lished that consumers prefer “mod- erate-sized birds” ranging from 11 to 14 pounds. He said another problem was to produce hatching eggs early in the season. He pointed out several California for hatching eggs and suggested that by putting early hatched pullets under artificial lights about December 1 they might secure hatching eggs by March 1. Central Authorized To Sell Note Issue By the Associated Press. The Interstate Commerce Com- mission yesterday authorized the New York Central Railroad to issue $16.000,000 of promissory notes. The railroad has $20,000,000 of outstanding 4 per cent notes falling due on April 30. It will pay the banks holding these notes 20 per cent in cash and the remainder in new notes. Half of the new notes will bear interest of 3 per cent and the other half 312 per cent. Decline in Copper Price Is Reported By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 26.—Engineer- ing and Mining Journal said yester- day the average price of copper net at Atlantic seaboard refineries, (about 225 of a cent under Con- necticut valley) declined during the week ended yesterday to 11.071 cents compared with 11275 the previous week. Russians Repored . |Reselling Copper Due to Blockade Unwillingness to Take War Risks Results In Offerings By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 26—Russian interests, substantial purchasers of American copper several months ago, were reported in trade circles today to be offering the red metal for resale in the domestic market, possibly because of unwillingness to risk the allied blockade. ‘These sources sald Russian selling began ‘trickling into the market late yesterday and tonnage placed was believed to aggregate between 12,000 and 15,000 tons. The Russian-owned metal, it is believed, is not pressing for sale, but it is available in both export and domestic marts. Some dealers say the copper was part of that bought by Russian sources some months back, then destined for shipment to Vladi- vostok. Several shipments then were sent to Mexico for transshipment to Russia. Some metal shipped from the West Coast to Russia, however, was turned back in midocean when ships returned to this hemisphere as the British blockade widened., Washington Produce TER—93 score. 30%2: ¥s-pound prin T-poting prints. 0;, 91 score. NEW YORK, April 26—Both spring and retail trade were dee scribed as “laggard” today in the weekly trade review of Dun & Bradstreet. The delay in appearance of warm weather, said the agency, “con- tinued this week to check a full expansion in seasonal trade activ- ity.” “Retarded demand at retail,” the report continued, “was reflected in the slow pace of wholesale order= ing.
