By VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Pinancial Writer. NEW YORK, April 26.—Stocks turned downward in today’s market as traders lightened commitments to be on the safe side over the ap- proaching week end. Pessimism regarding the trend of warfare in Norway helped inspire selling here and there, brokers said, and tended to offset the bullish effect of first quarter steel figures and highly favorable earnings statements from individual com- panies. The list got off to a sketchy start. Prices later rallied, but offerings be- came more urgent in the final hour. Closing declines ran to around 2 points or so for leaders. Steels and aircrafts were in front of the re- treat. Dealings, lively in the forenoon, slackened on the attempted recov- ery. Transfers for the full session were around 900,000 shares. Principal losers were U. S. Steel, Bethlehem, Chrysler, Douglas Air- craft, Boeing, Glenn Martin, Ana- conda, Great Northern, Southern Railway, U. S. Rubber, Montgomery Ward, Safeway Stores and Air Re- | duction. Resistant issues, up at one time, were International Paper preferred, Savage Arms, Rayonier, Ex-Cell-O Corp. and Baldwin Locomotive. Off as much as a point or more in the curb were Bell Aircraft, Creole Petroleum, Aluminum of America and Illinois Zinc. Contest= ing the move were Buckeye Pipe, Heyden Chemical and Electric Bond | & Share. Chicago Grain By the Associated Press. CHICAGO.
