' BALTIMORE, Md. April 25— Fresh from a swing t.hrough ‘Western Maryland, Senator Radcliffe today assured campaign workers at his Baltimore headquarters he is con- fident of the 75 convention votes necessary for his renomination. ‘With the applause of audiences in Washington, Allegany and Garrett Counties still ringing in his ears, the junior Maryland Senator started on & round of conferences and “stump” appearances heré that are due to keep him out .until tomorrow morning. Senator Radcliffe told advisers upon his return from the Western Maryland junket this morning that | “there is no county in the State where the situation with regard to my victory in the Democratic primary doesn’t look reasonably good.” Measures Strength. He said that “conservative figur- ing” indicates the support he will receive in Baltimore City, in Harford, Baltimore and Carroll Counties and on the Eastern Shore will be suf- ficient to give him the required 75 convention votes. “The outcome of the primary in the rest of the State is a more specu- lative matter,” Senator Radcliffe added. “Strong organizations op- pose me in the remaining cougties, but I feel I can expect at least an even break in Southern Maryland.” He declared that in spite of the opposition he feels he has “a chance to carry Prince Georges and Mont- gomery Counties” and that he “may carry Frederick.” | In winding up his Western Mary- | land tour, Senator Radcliffe told a group of Garrett County workers at Oakland last night that it was his personal support of former Rep- resentative David J. Lewis that gained the latter his present posi- tion as a member of the National Labor Mediation Board. He also delivered his first per- sonal attack upon his primary op- ponent, Democratic National Com- mitteeman Howard Bruce, for his part in the manufacture of muni- tions during the first World War, a point on which' other members of his organization previously have assailed the wealthy Baltimore banker. He also charged for the first time that Mr. Bruce had played a large part in blocking two bills in the Maryland Legislature designed spe- cifically to aid men over 45 years of age in obtaining employment. The Senator said that he hadn't mentioned Mr. Bruce's connection with the manufacture of war mu- nitions before, but that his opponent, as president of Bartlett Haywood Co., made and increased his fortune through the manufacture of muni- tions “on a cost plus basis, which means he couldn’t lose.” In charging that Mr. Bruce blocked legislation to help men over 45 years find work, Senator Radcliffe added that in his role as regional director of the P. W. A, for Maryland he had “helped many in the age class find employment.” Senator Radcliffe’s atlk was made before 17.campaign workers at a dinner in- the William James Hotel. It was followed by a reception at | which young Democrats met the | Senator. Radcliffe to Review Record in Radio Talk Senator Radcliffe will broadcast a review of his senatorial record at she said, were overburdened with 6:20 p.m. today over station WBAL, Baltimore, and a State-wide hookup. Two rallies in behalf of the Rad- cliffe candidacy are scheduled to- night and tomorrow: in Prince Georges County. The first will be held at 8 o'clock tonight at the Capitol Heights Thea- pm. at the Young Men’s Demo- cratic Club of Berwyn Heights. Representatives from five Mary- land counties will attend a Demo- cratic rally on behalf of the candi- dacy of Senator Radcliffe at North Beach, Md., at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Senator Radcliffe, Senator Tyd- ings, Mayor Howard Jackson of Baltimore and J. Harry Welch of Montgomery Coungy will speak. Five Seized in Slaying Of Boat Skipper Five men were under arrest today in connection with the slaying of Robert Lee St. John, 45-year-old skipper, who died yesterday in Casualty Hospital of a compound skull fracture. The men were said by police to have been involved in a brawl aboard Mr. St. John's boat, the Tillucum, Tuesday. The boat was moored in Kingman Lake, near Benning road N.E. Mr. St. John had been brutally beaten with heavy instruments which were found in the cabin of the boat. Police say they do not know how many of the suspects were actually involved in the fight. —_— Campaign Howard Bruce Begins 10-Day Campaign In Baltimore By WILL P. KENNEDY, Star Staff Correspondent. BALTIMORE, Md., April 25— Howard Bruce has started a 10-day intensive campaign in ‘Baltimore city — admittedly the locality in which he will win or lose his fight against Senator Radcliffe for the Democratic nomination for United States Senator. Mr. Bruce made a whirlwind tour of the 6th district last night, ad- dressing seven rallies in widely scat- tered localities from 7:30 p.m. until well after midnight. This followed a three-day tour of the Eastern Shore, with about & dozen stops during yes-- terday afterncon in Queen Annes County. “Forget all I have ever done for the party, for the State or for Bal- timore city,” he told gatherings that had waited several hours last night in cold halls to hear him, “and vote for me only if. you think I would make the best man for Senator.” He said he had the highest re- spect for the office and had tried to discuss important issues, but had been “forced by the opposition” to use time at the rallies in denying false charges which were dragged in “as a red herring to lead the voters off the trail” He declared he welcomed a real investigation of campaign expenses by a sena- torial committee and hoped it would be a real investigation and thorough. - He said Senator Tyd- ings, chief spokesman in the Rad- clife campaign, had reported ex- penditures of $88,000 in his last campaign. Asks Specific Information, He also said Gov. O'Conor had demanded that the . Tydings-Rad- cliffe alliance give specific instances of its charges that patronage and coercion had been practiced in State affairs—*“and for 48 hours there has been an impressive silence.” At every rally he attends, Mr. Bruce is greeted by several of his former employes who are working for his nomination. At every meet- ing he attended last night he pointed to important industrial plants in the community which he had built. The first and largest rally was at the United Democratic Club of the 18th ward, founded by the late John S. (Frank) Kelly, where Representa- tive Thomas A. D'Alesandro also THIS BIG 6% CU. Wilson was asking: “Have you ever heard of a Radcliffe act or a Rad- cliffe amendment?”—and he told the gathering, “No, because he tas taken the floor only once in a five and a half years.” Activities of Employes. Regarding political activity by Federal office holders, the speaker said, “Senators Tydings and Radcliffe should supply the committee with all available information. They are in a position to know whether Fed- eral employes are being required to participate, directly or%ndirectly, in this campaign. Mayor Jackson should be able to inform the in- vestigating committee just how ec- tive city office holders are in support of Senator Radcliffe.” A sound truck preceded the “Bruce-for-Senator” auto parade of ' and funeral director is to which every iamily is w:u‘inglon s 77]01[ M\W SN “““W\\x\mm\\m«\m*\ FT.
