5'%-Month Baby Thrives Infant Which Wei ghed 34 Ounces Is Expected to Reach Normaley. “Minor,” who weighed 34 ounces when born 31, months prematurely, is shown at right in the arms of Nurse Ruthlee Cade, while a normal baby is held by Nurse Florence O'Ready. “Minor” is expected to grow up normally. —Star Staff Photo. 34-ounce baby born three and one-half months before its A normal birth period is making medical history at Gallinger Hospital. The infant, which still weighs less than five pounds, has survived for 11 weeks—a rarity for a five and one- half month baby—and, physicians say, has “every chance of growing to normal childhood.” Since birth the child has been under special care of Gallinger doctors and nurses, have unofficially named the baby “Minor.” /Mz 1224 F 5T Scientific treatment of premature children, which has cut th~ mortality rate from approximately 50 per cent to about 25 per cent in the last decade, was credited for saving the infant's life. Placed in Bassinet. Immediately on being born, “Minor” was wrapped in blankets and placed in a bassinet, or a basket contraption heated by thermostatically controlled lights, it was explained by Dr. Kennth F. Laughlin, Gallinger's pediatrics specialist. This was done, he said, to prevent THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. This lack of development results in the infants assuming the temperature of its surroundings, Dr. Laughlin ex- plained. The same applies to any premature child, he said, in case its bath water is not regulated correctly, the room heat is not correct, etc. The ordinary premature baby re- mains in a bassinet only three or four weeks before tests are given the child to see if its heating mechanism has developed. “Minor,” however, still is living in his bassinet, which is regu- lated at 99.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Weighs 4 Pounds, 14 Ounces. Likewise, Dr. Laughlin explained, the ordinary premature baby resumes normal conditions when its weight reaches about six pounds, “Minor” now weighs 4 pounds and 14 ounces. For the first 16 hours after birth, “Minor” was fed only small amounts of water every two hours or so with & medicine dropper. This amount was increased gradually until the child received about 114 ounces with each feeding. Gallinger Hospital is caring for 12 premature babies at present, having had 21 since July. Care of these infants comes directly under Mrs. Lillian Reed, superintendent of the Delivery Ward, who said 156 were born at the hospital during the year ending last July. Dr. Laughlin said a premature baby was one born before the thirty sixth week of gestation and weighing less than 51% pounds. These babies usually are short on digdstive ferments be- cause of an undeveloped adrenal gland, which also regulates the blood pressure |~ and strength of the heart action. —Special Pet Sale— All Are Inoculated Against ¥ Distemper Smooth Haired Fox Terrlers, mew shipment, all in perfect health. NEW YORK, October 8—Luther Harr, chairman of the executive com- mittee of the National Association of Supervisors of State Banks, expressed the opposition of the association yes- terday to the McAdoo branch banking legislation. The assoclation, with banking supervisors from 36 States in atten- dance, opened its convention with a series of closed deliberations to formu- late a policy on branch banking which it will present next week to the annual meeting of the American Bankers' Association in Boston. In opposing the McAdoo bill, which would allow the extension of branch banking across State lines within the limit of a Federal reserve district, Harr, who is secretary of banking for the State of Pennsylvania, declared: “Branch banking should be left to the determination of the citizens of each State and national banks should sell give ";l" greatest satisfae- tion, A good value, H.
