BARNES DIES AT WALTER REED Adjutant General of First Field Army in France Was Native of Capital. Col. Joseph F. Barnes, U. S. A, retired, adjutant general of the first army, American Expeditionary Forces, died today at Walter Reed Hospital. Col. Barnes was born here on September 15, 1878, and began his military career as cadet at the West Point Military Academy. He was com- missioned in the Artillery Corps in 1901 and served in the Philippines campaign and in China. After serving in the Philippines in 1906, Col. Barnes was detailed as an instructor in the Department of Philosophy at the Military Academy, later serving two additional tours of duty in the Philippines. During the World War he served in France as adjutant general of the first Army artillery, then as adjutant gen- eral, Second Army Corps, and finally as adjutant general of the First Army. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his war duty. At other times Col. Barnes served as commanding officer of several Field Artillery regiments in France, After the war, he served several tours of duty in Washington and in 1923 was sent to China as chief of staff of the American forces there. At the time of his retirement, September 30 last, he was on duty in Panama as an inspector. He came from Panama directly to Walter Reed Hospital. Col. Barnes is survived by his widow, Mrs. Edith Barnes, whose temporary address is the Hostess House at Walter Reed. ol R \GEORGE S. ELLIS, ATTORNEY, DIES Served in Legal Division of Vet- erans’ Administration—Burial in Arlington. George S. Ellis, 39, an attorney in the legal division of the Veterans' Administration, died yesterday in Georgetown Hospital. He had been in failing health for several years, but | continued at work until about two weeks ago. A native of this city, Mr. Ellis was a graduate of the George Washington University Law School. For a number of years he had practiced law in Philadelphia. Mr. Ellis was a World War veteran, serving overseas in the Army Medical Corps as a master hospital sergeant. He belonged to the New Jerusalem Lodge of Masons and was a member of the District and Pennsylvania bars. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Hazel T. Ellis, and daughter Helene, who live at the family residence, 318 East-West Highway, Chevy Chase, Md.; his mother, Mrs. Ida May Ellis; Lwo sisters, Mrs. Edna Ellis Hilton and Mrs. Andrew T. Dent, and brother, Miner Ellis, all of this city. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 am. tomorrow at Mr. Ellis’ late resi- dence in Chevy Chase. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery. M'CANN DIES AT RESIDENCE Chief of Cannon Section, Army Ordnance Department, Was Il Since May. George M. McCann, 53, chief engi- neer of the cannon section of the Army Ordnance Department, died yesterday at his home, 16 Aspen street. He had been ill since May 5. Mr. McCann, who had been in Government service for more than 20 years, designed all types of can- non from the size of the French 75 to 16-inch guns. He was widely known in the department as an expert in his line, A native of New Castle, Del, Mr. McCann received his early education in public schools there and later was graduated from Drexel Institute, Philadelphia.
