NEW YORK, October 8—Little headway was made by trade and in- dustry this week, although few branches relinquished ground gained in the past month, Dun & Bradstreet said today in the weekly review of business. “Combatting weather vagaries,” the agency said, “retail distribution pushed forward slowly, hampered chiefly by the lag in apparel demand. Budget restrictions kept orders to wholesalers in close alignment with stock liquida- tion, advance buying proceeding cau- tiously. “Aside from the steel and metals divisions, recessions in industrial oper- ations were less severe, but most manu- facturers. continued to adjust rates to new-order receipts.” ‘The review estimated retail sales for the country as a whole at from 1 to 4 per cent over the preceding week and from § to 18 per cent over the comparable week last year. It pointed out that October, 1936, was one of the best months of the year for most mer- chants. In districts where the weather was mild reports indicated business was below the preceding week, with in- terest at a low ebb in such Winter accessories as fur garments and heavy overcoats, A distinct upturn was noted in hardware, stoves, ofl burners and a wide range of household goods. Men's suits sold better than topcoats, Percentage increases over the 1936 week in the major geographic areas were: New England, 3 to 10; East, 4 to 16, Middle West, 10 to 15; Northwest, 6 to 15; South, 12 to 25; Southwest, 10 to 30, and Pacific Coast, 6 to 12. The review pointed out that the cot- ton marketing season in the South and Southwest apparently was an im- portant factor in the better than average showing made in those areas, Washington Produce BUTTER—82 score, 1 Ya-pound prints. 1;bound prints tub. 36; market strong. COAL PURCHASES |L CONTINUE TO LAG Industry Looks for Boost of 20 to 30 Centsa Ton in New Schedule. B) the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 8—Even though the industry looks for a rise of 20 to 30 cents a ton when the Natfonal Bituminous Coal Commis- sion establishes its achedule of mini- mum prices pursuan’ to the Guffey act, coal sales have been moving slowly, with buying covering only current needs. Producers believe this due to sp- prehension over the trend of Winter business volumes. Despite slowing sales, however, ‘the industry produced 317,366,000 tons of soft coal up to ‘September 18, com- pared with 292,577,000 tons in the same period of 1936, an increase of 8.5 per cent. Unless demand should break down entirely there was little doubt that the output for the year would be the largest since 1930, when 467,526,000 tons were produced. 8o far there does not appear to be any undue concern over the sched- ule of minimum prices which will result from enforcement of the Guffey act. Under terms of the Guffey act the coal commission is empowered to set minimum prices based on average cost of production for each of the leading grades in major producing districts, With the multiplicity of grades and producing areas, the industry expects some adjustment in the sched- ule will be necessary in coming months. Producers are also concerned with the application of railroads, asking the Interstate Commerce Commission to raise freight rates. If the railroads get the increase of 3 to 11 cents a ton on coal the total potential in- crease per ton would range from 25 to around 40 cents. el D in cel 4 SHORT-TERM SECURITIES. (Reported by Chas.
