SIMON, an English visitor to our shores, confounded the ex- perts when he presented them with the hand shown below on which a small slam was made. The hand was played originally by Jack Marx, a friend of Mr. Simon, in a London club. At first glance there appeared to be two inescapable losers, but Mr. Marx managed to lose only one trick by executing what he called a “sub- marine squeeze.” South, dealer. Both sides vulnerable. ‘The bidding: South ~ West 1v Pass 3& 34 Pass 5& 5% Pass Pass Pass Pass Mr. Marx trumped the opening club lead, led a small trump, to dum- my, then ruffed another ciub. He next led a diamond, playing low from dummy, and East, after winning with the queen, returned the king. After winning the second diamond lead with the ace, Mr. Marx trumped a third club. Then, entering dummy with the king of spades, he trumped dum- my’s last club with his ace of trumps. At this point, declarer held three spades, his losing diamond and the queen of hearts, whereas West held three spades, the jack of diamonds and & trump. West had already been squeezed when declarer started ruf- fing clubs. On the second club lead he had thrown a spade, on the third a diamond and finally had discarded a trump in an attempt to protect both diamonds and spades. Mr. Marx now led his last trump, overtaking with dummy’s king, then discarded his remaining diamond on dummy’s last trump, thus leaving himself with the ace-queen-small in spades. The last trump was the fatal squeezing card on West, who held the jack-ten- small of spades and the high dia- mond. West elected to discard a spade, whereupon Mr. Marx ran- off the last three spade tricks to com- plete as well-played a hand as we have ever seen.
