FINANCIAL. CURB LIST TENDS T0 HIGHER LEVELS Many Steady to Fractions Ahead After Wide Early Decline. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 6.—After a wide decline, rallying tendencies crop- ped out in the curb market today and as trading went into the final hour many shares were about even to frac- tions higher. Losses generally did not exceed a point. ¢ ‘Taking the recovery trail for minor gains were Northern States Power “A)” Lake Shore Mines and Amer- ican Gas & Electric. A few higher-priced stocks showed declines of around a point, including Sherwin-Williams and Pittsburgh Plate Glass. Fractionally lower, but improved from earlier levels were Gulf ©Oil, Aluminum Co., American Cyana- mid “B,” Standard Power & Light and McWilliams Dredging. Many popular issues, such as United Wall Paper, right Hargreaves, American Superpower, Cord Corp., Creole Petroleum, Electric Bond & Share and International Petroleum ‘were unchanged. . Copper Reduced To 121/4-Cent Mark As Buying Drops E3 the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK. October 6.—The price of domestic copper was reduced one- quarter cent a pound yesterday by cus- tom smelters. Falling back to 12!, cents a pound, the market yielded the one-quarter cent advance, announced yesterday. The reaction was attributed by metal circles to renewed weakness in the export markei and curtailment of domestic buying following Monday's boost. Primary producers were reported holding at 13 cents a pound, un- changed from early last week when they lowered the price 1 cent. The custom smelters made two cuts which lowered the market to 12 cents. But near the close of last week they lifted the price to 12! cents. CURB BONDS DOMESTIC BONDS. H 5 85 27 106% 10635 1063, 86 . By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, October 6.—Steel buying continues at a low level and there is still doubt as to whether the bottom of the production decline has been reached, satd Iron Age today ln its weekly survey of the trade. Uncertainty concerning the future operating trend remains in spite of a large volume of long-delayed buying by the automobile industry. General Motors and Chrysler placed substan- tial orders, the summary said, al- though they did not arrive in time to prevent a further dip in ingot output this week to an estimated 66 per cent of capacity. This compared with 74 per cent last week. “Having reached the end of their once large backlogs,” the review stated, “the mills are now forced to make & rapid adjustment of opera- tions in line with the volume of day- to-day orders. A few companies.re- ceived more tonnage in September than in August. But for the majority the sales trend in the past month was downward. Improvement Expected. “October should bring an improve- ment over September both in auto- motive buying and in general re- plenishment, but the extent of the lat- ter is dependent upon the rapidity with which miscellaneous users of steels liquidate present stocks, which in many instances are sufficient to last from 30 to 90 days at present rates of consumption. “One obstacle to the resumption of buying by railroads has been removed by settlement of the wage controversy, and, although industry generally is opposed to further pyramiding of costs, there is a recognition of the justice of the carriers’ plea for higher freight rates to compensate for wage rises. L C. C. Is Silent. “No word is obtainable from the Interstate Commerce Commission &s to when a decision may be announced, and there is doubt in the steel trade that it will come in time to produce much buying of steel by the railroads over the remainder of the year. If orders should come late in the quarter, they will benefit early 1938 schedules rather than this quarter operations. “With an almost complete cessation of steel mill buying of scrap, prices have declined except at Pittsburgh, where sharp drops had previously oc- curred, bringing the Iron Age scrap composite price down to $16.91, its low point of the year thus far dnd 17 cents below the previous low of $17.08 in June.” DECLINE REVEALED IN OIL PRODUCTION Petroleum Institute Estimates Daily Average Crude Flow Off 18,850 Barrels. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 6.—Crude oil production and gasoline stocks de- clined in the week ended October 2, the American Petroleum Institute in- dicated. The flow of crude dipped 18,850 barrels daily to 3,647,450 barrels. California output was up slightly as the daily average east of that State fell 21,250 barrels to 2,957,250 barrels. Finished and unfinished gasoline in- ventories at refineries, terminals and in transit declined 354,000 barrels at the week end to 65,266,000 barrels. Cracked gasoline production was in- dicated to have averaged 780,000 bar- rels daily, the institute stated, un- changed from the week before. Im- ports of crude and refined oils totaled 1,296,000 barrels, against 950,000 bar- rels. —_— England has started restoration of famous Scarborough Castle. —— e Stock and Sales— Dividend Rate, Add 00.
