He had been ill since July. A native of Danville, Va.,, Dr. Mot- ley was a graduate of William and Mary College and the University of Maryland. Funeral services for Mrs. Mae Emma Marquis, 55, who died August 30 in Rome, Italy, were held yesterday in Calvary Baptist Church. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Formerly a resident of this city, Mrs. Marquis had lived in Rome since 1935, when her husband, John Clyde Marquis, was named American dele- gate to the International Institute of Agriculture there. Before going to Rome, Mr. Marquis was director of economic information, Bureau of Economics, Department of Agriculture. Mr. and Mrs. Marquis lived here from 1919 to 1935, previously residing at 1737 Irving street. Mrs. Marquis had been a member of the Sixteenth Street Heights Wom- en’s Club and the Potomac Grange. A native of Madison, Ind., she at- tended high school there and later the University of Wisconsin. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, John Firth Marquis of Camden, N. J, and Roger Phillips Marquis of New York, and two brothers, Frank W. and Willis F. Her assailant, a colored man, en- tered the shop while she was alone late yesterday and asked for some trousers. When he could not produce & ticket Mrs. Wertheim asked him to describe the trousers. Then, she said, he seized her, apparently intending to rob the place, Struggling with the man, she was thrown heavily to the floor, but at the same time she sank her teeth in the intruder’s arm, producing a deep ;vt;und.
