Inspector Headley, who retired two years ago after 39 years' continuous service on the force, died of a heart attack early yesterday at his home, 217 Ninth street southwest. Coming to Washington from Ches- ter, Pa, his birthplace, Inspector Headley was appointed to the force in 1896. His first “beat” was in the old Southwest section, then known as “Bloodfield,” where, because of his alertness, he earned the name “Bird- Eye.” Commended for arresting a murderer without firing a shot, he was made a | bicycle officer in 1901 and a year He was promoted to sergeant in 1905 and to lieutenant in 1917. ‘When he became a captain in 1919, Inspector Headley organized the first city-wide traffic squad and did much to improve traffic control. In 1922 he was appointed inspector and a year later he became head of the Traffic Bureau, which post he held until June, 1925, ‘The appointment of the inspector as assistant superintendent in 1935 car- ried out a “gentlemen’s agreement” between former Representative Blan- W. Brown, which was disclosed at congressional hearings. Succeeding Inspector Thaddeus R. Bean, Inspector Headley retired after superintendent. was abolished. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ger- trude Headley; a son, Albert J. GREENHUT DEATH IS LAID TO POISON Coroner's Jury Says Convicted Physician Got Drug From Unknown Source, By the Associated Press, BEL AIR, Md., August 17.—A coro- ner's jury reported today that Dr. Armin Greenhut, convicted of a statu- tory offense on a 13-year-old girl, “came to his death from taking a Ppoison obtained from source unknown to the jury.” The jury also cleared Sheriff Gran- ville C. Boyle of any laxity in guarding the 39-year-old foreign-born physi- cian, who 4as found dead in his cell “Every precaution that was possible to be taken was taken by the sheriff,” the jury said. The jury heard Sheriff Boyle detail the arrangements he made for guard- ing Dr. Greenhut. He said the prisoner was allowed no visitors. Dr. Charles Richardson, the jail physician, reported to the jury the findings of an autopsy on Dr. Green- hut's body. State's Attorney D. Paul McNabb read the report of Dr. How- ard Maldeis, who conducted the au- topsy. He also read the report of chemists who analyzed the dead phy- sician’s organs.
