A—16 xxx D. C. PHONE TOTAL CONTINUESTORISE Reaches 220,069 at End of July, Compared With 206,371 Year Ago. BY HAROLD B. ROGERS. Telephone business still is on the increase, according to the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co., which re- ports that at the close of business on July 31 this city was served by 220,068 telephones, as compared with 206,371 on the same date last year. ‘This was an increase of 41 tele- phones during the month of July this year. Telephone calls were also increased over July last year from 795964 average daily calls during July, 1936, to 844,255 average originating calls per day for July, 1937, Friedlander Joins Staff. Philip Friedlander, well known cus- tomers’ man, has become associated with J. S. Bache & Co., with offices in the Washington Hotel. A native of Washington and a star athlete in his high school days here Mr. Friedlander has been directly asso- ciated with a number of local broker- age houses. In New York he studied under the late Richard D. Wychoff, founder of the Magazine of Wall Street, who was the originator of the charting system—for market valua- tion. In welcoming Mr. Friedlander as an associate of Bache & Co., Frank J. F. Thiel, manager, and a former assistant treasurer of the United States, paid tribute to the new member of his staff who has handled some of the largest brokerage accounts in the city. James Hennessey, for many years cashier of the local office, has been made a floor man. Rickey to Speak. Branch Rickey, vice president and general manager of the St. Louis Na- tional League Cardinal base ball team, will be the principal speaker at annual radio commencement exercises of the American Institute of Banking Friday night, September 10, it was announced by Miss Catherine M. Krieg of Riggs National Bank, member of the insti- tute’s committee. The program will be broadcast over the National Broadcast- ing System from 8:30 to 9 p.m. National Income Lags. Although national income produced in the United States declined in June for the third successive month, ac- cording to the Alexander Hamilton Institute, it is questionable whether any slump before the close of 1937 will be severe enough to offset the good gain made during the first half of the year. The increase during the first half of this year was 20.3 per cent as com- pared with the same period a year ago, as national income rose from $29,- 300,000 to $35,245,000,000. Income in June amounted $5,890,000,000, as compared Wwith $6,017,000000 in May, and with $6,065,000.000 at the 1937 peak, in March. At the same tifhe the June income was 13.6 per cent larger than in June last year, when the income was $5,185,000,000. This gain over 1936, however, was the smallest for any month this year, having declined steadily from a 28.2 per cent increase in March. It is possible, predicted the insti- tute, that when the returns for July are available, they will show a re- versal of the recent downward trend in the national income. It is appar- ent, however, that it is probable that the national income in July was still running above last year's level, thus providing further support to the be- lief that the annual income in 1937 will be larger than in 1936 despite the evidence that conditions will not be as favorable during the remaining months as in the early part of this year. Shipments of railroad locomotives, as reported by principal manufactur- ing plants, totaled 39 in July, as com- pared with 13 in the same month of last year, the Department of Com- merce reported. In June of this year, these shipments totaled 38. For firts seven months of this year Jocomotive shipments aggregated 224, eompared with only 40 in the cor- respanding period of last year. Vacation Notes. Alfred H. Lawson, vice president and real estate officer of the Washington Loen & Trust Co., has returned from an extended tour of Europe. L I Chorpening, chief national bank examiner for the fifth Federal district, including Washington, sails from New York today for a six-week vacation in Europe. Maurice D. Rosenberg, president of the Bank of Commerce and Savings, is spending two weeks at Bedford 8prings, Pa. LARGE NORTH CAROLINA TOBACCO YIELD DUE By the Associated Press. RALEIGH, N. C, August 17.—The State Department of Agriculture esti- mated North Carolina farmers would harvest 546,940,000 pounds of tobacco this year. The crop forecast, made as of August 1, was based on an expected yield of 8175 pounds an acre and came as farmers in the border belt ‘were receiving good prices. Only twice before in the State's history—in 193¢ and 1935—has a yield of 817.5 been exceeded. The expected harvest was an increase of 4,320,000 pounds over the July 1 fore- cast. to FAILURES TOTAL DOWN. NEW YORK, August .7 (#).—Busi- hess failures in the United States for the week ended August 12 totaled 153, compared with 156 the week before and 149 in the like week a year ago, Dun & Bradstreet reported.
