AS MENTIONED many times be- fore, the player who gets swings in his favor will usually win, even though he is continually making un- important mistakes. One of the best ways of obtaining swings is the sur- prise attacking lead against a slam contract, by means of which you force the declarer to make an important de- cision at trick 1 For instance, Henry Chanin of Atlanta, on a recent | visit to New York, saved a vulnerable | grand slam by means of such a lead. DIGGIN' T EVER North's initial response of one heart only was based on the fact that if his partner’s opening bid were pswchic, | they would probably have no play for game. Otherwise his partner would rebid and he would go after the slam. When South rebid his diamond suit, North made a jump, forcing bid of three spades. Now, when his partner signed off at three no trump, North quite properly jumped to six. South’s bid of seven no trump was based on the fact that while his hand was more or less minimum in high cards, he not only held a six- | card suit all his own, but also honors |in both suits bid by his partner. | Therefore, he reasoned that either both major suits would be solid or that his partner would have the king to fit his diamond suit, where- |upon the fifth and six diamonds would become additional tricks. After studying the situation care- fully, Mr. Chanin decided that dummy would hold both the ace and king of hearts, and accordingly opened the nine-spot of that suit, being certain that declarer would not take | a finesse on the first trick in playing a seven-bid. Actually, declarer con- sidered the finesse carefully, but since he saw that with a diamond break he would have all the tricks anyway, he went right up with the ace of hearts and then laid down the king of dia- monds. When diamonds failed to break, he was helpless, since all he could now make were two hearts, four spades, three diamonds and three clubs for a total of 12 tricks. Of course, if Mr. Chanin had failed to open a heart, declarer would have taken the finesse in that suit, once diamonds failed to break. As it is, he is still gnashing his teeth.
