I believe this will be an important issue in the next congressional cam- paign, as well as the Ludlow resolu- THE EVENING . It is my conviction that the Repub- lican party must chart a liberal- conservative course between hide- bound reactionary and old guardism on one side and dangerous radicalism or socialism on the other. The party must be liberalized in leadership and policies in order to bring back within its folds the millions of wage earners in the industrial centers and the farmers and liberals of the West. If tion, giving the American people the | we don't, in the next presidential elec- STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., Vermont. It must be self-evident that the Re- publicans in Congress must oppose all unsound legislation, wild and so- cialistic experiments and unconstitu- tional measures, and that we must not compromise with the advocates of Marxism, socialism, radicalism or any form of class hatred. On the other hand, we must not go back to the old order of alleged domination of the mny_ by special privilege, wealth and Iparty is an uprising of the rank-and- | file Republicans and of the more pro- | gressive younger element in the pres ldential primaries to prevent the han bicked corporation lawyers, large con- tributors and discredited reactionaries from being elected as delegates to the Inational convention and selecting the Inext Republican candidate for Presi- lent, for whosoever is nominated by | his element is doomed to defeat and he party will disappear like the n]d; /hig party. I b > I am able to tate the Republican attitude on in- ernational issues, as I have served on he Committee on Foreign Affairs for h6 years and am the ranking Repub- fican member of that committee and o that extent spokesman of my party n the House and in the country. In a few words the Republican p cy is to keep out of all entangiing lliances, sanctions and war commit- ents of every kind, and to mind our wn business and let the other nations ind theirs. If the great nations of he world insist on arming to the eeth and going to war, it is their war and not ours. licy toward Ch if the war s Would Call Americans Home. We are prepared to spend millions ffor defense, but not a dollar to send American soldiers to foreign lands to izht other people’s battles. I favor, pnd I believe most Americans would oncur, that all Ameri roops, Ma- rines, gunboats and of our prmed forces be withdrawn from China foefore we become 1 d in an Asiatic war. All Ame! n citizens hould be ordered to leave the war pone or stay at heir own risk. I am pposed to having the ted States olice China or any other sovereign hation. and above all, T am opposed to policy that makes use of the nited States to pick the chestnuts ut of the fire for the British Empire In China and elsewhere.
