VALUATION $2,560,000 FOR ALL CONSTRUCTION | One-Family Dwellings and Apart- | ments Account for Most of Total. The valuation of private building operations in Washington dropped off approximately 33 per cent during July in comparison with the corresponding month of last year, the monthly report of Building Inspector John W. Oeh- mann showed today Col. Oehmann's report placed the building valuation for last month at $2,560,405, exclusive of District and Federal government construction ac- tivities. Municipal building for which permits were approved in the mcuth totaled $321,550. No report had been received of Federal operations. Pri- vate building in July. 1936, reached $3.768,010, one of the highest totals| of the post-depression building revival ‘The figure for last year included two huge warehouses valued at nearly million dollars The July total was slightly in ex- eess of the June figure, but it demon- | strated beyond doubt that there has been a slackening of the fast priva Lm building pace started here more than | two years ago. However, the total| for seven months of 1937 was well ahead of the corresponding period of 1936, due to the large lead piled up in early months of the year. One-Family Dwellings. Permits were issued for 146 one- | family dwellings, with a vaiuation of | $839,750, last month, as compared with 201 one-family structures, valued | At $1,311,175, approved in July, 1936. | Apartment building valuation showed 8 slight increase over last year, al-| though providing space for a smaller number of families. Apartment con- struction last month included 31 buildings valued at $480,000, while 30 | buildings with a valuation of $424.500 were erected in July, 1936. However, | structures erected in the month last year had a capacity of 33 more fami- lies than were provided for in last | month's apartment construction. Valuation of additions, alterations and repairs to existing buildings like- | wise droped below the total for July of last year, with totals of $582,305 | and $616,135, respectively. Valuation by Sections. Valuation of new construction July for the four sections of the city | is as follows: Northwest, $1.064,550; | Northeast, $540.750; Southeast, $285,- | 300, and Southwest. $87.500. Total| for alterations, additions, and repairs for the sections are Northwest, $493,020; Northeast, $34.955; South- | east, $47,930, and Southwest, $6,400. | Col. Ochmann approved raze per- mits for 18 structures last month Of all new buildings for which permits ‘were taken out during the month 182 were brick and 11 frame construction. | How to Fix Attic. } Because attic rooms are usually | badly lighted and awkward in shape. | eareful color treatment is advisable for their decoration. By doing some- thing very bright and gay with the color scheme it is possible to cemmw attention on the decorative effect and | not on the room'’s deficiencies. In one attractive bed room, the walls and | ceiling were painted rich ivory and | light vermilion was applied to the | door and other trim. The room was furnished in early American style and | antique hardware on the vermilion | door added still further to its interest. | EDMONDS | ART STONE CO.
