When she had left and had sent the jcubs up a tree to await her return she had paid no special attention to the tree they had climbed. 8he had called them down from a tree in which she had discovered that Prickly Porky the Porcupine waa feeding, and * had warned the cubs never to climb a tree in which that fellow happened to be. Then she had sent them safely up another tree nearby and had gone off with an easy mind Now she was back, to discover that all three, the cube and Prickly Porky, were in the same tree. Mother Bear was very angry. She at once jumped to the conclusion that the cubs had disobeyed her and out of curiosity had gone back and climbed the tree in which Prickly Porky had been at first. The fact that the twins were up near the top of the tree and Prickly Porky only half way up, between them and the ground, escaped her notice ' at first. 8he saw only that all three were in the same tree, and after what she had warned the cubs this could mean but one thing—disobedience. S0 Mother Bear was very angry. She strode up to the foot of the tree. “Come down at once” she ordered in her deepest, most grumbly- rumbly voice. The cubs started to obey, but when they got almost to where Prickly Porky was sitting close to the trunk of the tree, s0 close that there could be no passing him without brushing against him, they stopped and began to whimper. “Come down,” A Mother Bear ve- peated. ‘“Come down this imstant. And stop your whimpering,” she added. It was right then that she realized the predicament the cubs were in and the risk they would take if they tried to pass Prickly Porky, who was by this time very much disturbed nnd was switching his tail about nervously. It would be just too bad if that tail happened to hit one of the cubs, for 1t was covered with little barbed quills, the little spears which are Prickly Pork’s protection. “Go back up!” she ordered, as sharply as she had ordered them (o eeme down. They obeyed promptly. They were glad to obey. dn't I tell you never to climb a tree in which was this fellow!” snarled Mother Bear. “We didn't!” chorused the cubs. “He climbed the tree we were ‘in. This is the tree you saw us climb before you left. We haven't been out of it since.” Mother Bear knew that they were telling the truth. Out of her long experience she knew exactly what hap happened. “That good for noth- ing decided he wanted a change of trees, s0 he climbed down from the » one he was in and just happened to choose the one the twins were in. His sight is none too good, and probably he didn't see them,” thought she, which was exactly what had happened, as you know. What was to be done now? That was the question. Mother Bear knew that if she should start to climb up Prickly Porky would be likely to move on higher up. He could go higher than she could, and she knew that he knew it. This would be unfortunate for the cubs. As long as he thought she was about Prickly Porky would stay where he was. She knew that, too. If only he would go way out on a branch she could climb up and keep him there while the cubs climbed down. But now that he had dis- covered her, he was not likely to go way out on a branch. It seemed that the best thing to do was to order the twins to remain where they were and to go off again. Perhaps if Prickly Porky thought she had really gone away he would come down. So Mother Bear ordered the eubs to remain where they were and off she went. “As if we could do anything but remain where we are,” mumbled ons of the cubs. (Covrright. 1937.)
