Volunteers from nearby collieries | dug through rock and crumbled tim- bers yesterday to reach the men in & lower level to which they were carried by a slide of loose earth from | the pit where they were working. ‘The rescuers reached Benedict Ric- eoppeli, 36, two hours after he was trapped. Near him they found the body of Angelo Lorendi, 48, who was erushed in the fall, Six and a half hours later they had cut through to John Meconan- cio, 56. The winner of first prize was Irv- ing Studenberg, apprentice in the Government Printing Office. His award is an all-expense trip to the International Association's ~ Conven- tion in Cleveland.
