AN’ GIVE BILL TH’ HIGH SIGN TO BRING Nature’s Children BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY. WATER SPIDER (Argyroneta aquatica). ON! of the cleverest fishermen to be found around ponds, streams and similar places is the water spider. To watch some of them is to be highly entertained and interested, for most of us think of spiders as web spinners only on dry land. In late April the male water spider goes a-courting. grhnps he is well A aware of the fact that spider maidens and matrons have a habit of eating gallant male spiders upon .the spot, 50 he takes no chances. Close beside the lovely silk apart- ment occupied by his lady love he constructs & smaller edition. It is made of waterproof, compact silk, and has a long hall added. This end he attaches to her home. Then he makes the side walls and roof secure, an- chors the dwelling to aquatic plants and proceeds to cut through the silken wall of the fair one’s domicile. In this way the spider Romeo enters & home he could not get into otherwise. He approaches from the rear. She may pretend she is not aware of his presence and give him a kick. She insists on hanging partly out of her door, to do most of her fishing. He tickles her feet and she likes it! Her own residence is a beautiful glistening white silk dome, well an- chored to nearby plants with strong cables of silk. When it is time for her to lay her eggs she constructs a handsome ivory-white cocoon that looks as if it had been woven on a flat surface. It is finished with a balloonlike top and is swung by strong silken NF in her o#m apartment, £ J the exit being pointed downward for easy emergence into water for the young spiderlings. There are from 80 to 200 beautiful orange-yellow eggs, and about July the youngsters swarm from their silk nursery into the water. Water spiders spend practically all their time under the water. Their hairy coat collects and holds the air. ‘The greater amount is on the back because the hairs are more dense there. | From the first day they are good | swimmers and fine hunters. They molt when their skin becomes too tight, then hasten to eat more and - REFERENCE TO A THIRD MAN,"BILLY WAS A TRICK TO IMPRESS THE VICTIMS. h=|| THERE WAS =]l NO THIRD B man/ outgrow several suits. Each baby constructs a small silk home in which to live, forsaking it for & larger one to sccommodate his girth as time goes on. Life is made hectic for the tiny in- sects and creatures he hunts, and in turn he must be ever on the alert for foes who are after his tender, juicy body. Darting about in the water on a bright sunshiny day, these young spiders often look like shiny bubbles. They are as brilliant as diamonds and apparently know how to swim the moment they strike out for themselves. ‘mon, WHAT ARE THEY STAY IN THERE Registered U. 8. Patent Office. They go in and out of their mother's home, Sometimes they will be seen attacking an insect together.
