ANITA ~d THE STORY THUS FAR. Carol Clayton returns to the Brookdale horse-breeding farm in Saratoga. with her wealthy fiance, Hartley Madison. On her first day back, her father, Jim Clayton, dies. Carol resents his friend, Duke Bradley, a bookmaker, be- cause he has tried to get Hartley to bet with him. She arrogantly tells him she will pay her father’s debt or $76.000 after she is mar- ried. Duke accuses her of marry- mg for money. Infuriated, Carol postpones the wedding, sells her colt, Moow Ray and starts to play the horses so she can pay Dukc herself. Her luck is spectacular, but on the train to the Baltimore track. Duke warns her that she is heading for a nervous breakdown. CHAFTER VIIL Duke saw Rosetta. She did not ®ee him, nor did she hear him when he called. Duke smiled and turned back to Carol “T hate to interfere. It was her en- gacement ring “Thank vou,” she said and her face fushed as she tonk the ring and slipped it on her finger. Something strange 4n her voice and manner touched Duke “Whv don't vou send for Madison?" te said in a low tone, as he held the door open for her. “Good-night,” she said “Mv., Miss Carol.” Rosetta said #s they =started down the corridor, “ain't he grand? There were men and women there whom she had known since she was ® Dttle girl. She couldn’t hope to pass through them without stopping for greetings and questions and talk of the old davs. She didn't feel equal to it. If only she hadn't sent for Duke! He always got on her nerves! She spoke to a number of old ac- quaintances but she was polite only, not cordial. She was as one from snother world. But not when “Hand- Riding"” Kelly greeted her. There was gomething so human. =0 winning ebout the pint-sized jockey that no one could do anything less than be &3 friendly to him as he was to the | whole world “Oh.
