AIR RACE PRIZES ATTRACT PILOTS National and Bendix Events Offer $25,000—Speed Mark May Fall. Fighting for $25,000 in prizes, the largest purse in transtontinental air racing history, a field of outstanding American pilots, a number of them in specially built racing planes, will take off from Los Angeles September 3 bound for the National Air Races, opening that day at Cleveland, and New York, in the annual Bendix Trophy race. The existing record of 245 miles per hour, set by James H. Haizlip in 1932, is expected to fall this year. Henry T. (“Dick”) Merrill, hero of two round trips across the Atlantic, and Jack Lambie, his Eastern Air Lines co-pilot, are to be among the entries. Frank W. Fuller is to fly one of| the sensational new Seversky com- bat airplanes designed for the mili- tary service, which is said to have made 321 miles per hour in routine| tests, without competitive pressure. Fuller is stripping down the con-| ventional military model to make a| special racer. Roscoe Turner, outstanding Ben- dix race veteran, is to have two spe- cial airplanes ready for the National Air Races, it has been reported here, and will have at least one of them in | the Bendix. Both are being rebuilt | by Matty Laird, designer of famous | racing planes. Three of the first five places in last year'’s Bendix race were taken | by women flyers and Louise Thn-‘ den, last year's winner, will be back this year with a new, fast plane. Laura Ingalls, who finished second last year, also will compete. Jac- queline Cochrane also is expected to enter a new ship of advanced type EMPLOYER IS VICTOR | IN DETROIT STRIKE Work Resumed at Fry Products, ‘Where Boss Twice Has | Gone on Strike. By the Associated Press DETROIT, July 22 —Work resumed | yesterday at Fry Products, Inc., where the boss twice has gone on strike, and | the new peace was greeted with plans | for company expansion. Walter L. Fry, president, whose em- ployes capitulated to his demanded ex- clusion of the United Automobile Workers of America, as such, from any signed agreement, reopened the| plant. i The workers, he said, have “made | their decision and I have confidence in their promise to keep it.” | On their insistence yesterday to stand | by the union, Fry closed the plant. Re- ‘ considering, 150 employes late in the‘ day accepted Fry's terms regarding the U. A. W. A, which he charged was | *“irresponsible.” Fry, who gained Nation-wide notice last February when he followed his employes’ sit-down strike with & sit- down of his own, announced the busi- ness will be expanded to employ 400 persons within the next 10 days. Two hundred and fifty now are employed. In announcing peace terms, Charles A. Farnum, chairman of the Workers’ Negotiating Committee, told an em- ployes’ meeting, “We want to be good members,” but “when we haven't any dough, we can't pay dues. We can't even eat.” “Fry has promised to bargain with us as his employes,” Farnum said, “and we can gain just as much deal- ing for ourselves.” e UTAH’S “PIONEER DAY” TO BE OBSERVED HERE ‘The 90th anniversary of the settling of Utah by the Mormons—"Pioneer Dey’—will be commemorated at a picnic and outing at 2 pm. CHEYENNE, Wyo, July 22—A feathered “pony express” set out yes- terday from Cheyenne to carry to President Roosevelt an invitation to attend the forty-first annual frontier | days celebration. Four homing pigeons bearing the message were freed as the sun cast first long shadows across the Wyoming plains. They and their successors on the |} flight are expected to reach Washing- ton, D. C., before the celebration opens July 28. The birds winged their flight to Denver, sent Eastward by other birds. The three pigeons starting in Denver had Elm Creek, Nebr. as their goal.
