This has nothing at all to do with our story except that if it ran in any other direction, Barney Stokes wouldn't have run into Daphne Lytell. and there wouldn't be anything to write about. It seems that Barney was driving west on Hollywood boulevard shortly after 5 o'clock one February day. The eun was slanting down toward the hills and its orange rays struck him full in the face. For a moment he was blinded and so he did not see the figure step down from the curb into the white-laned crosswalk—did not &ee her until it was too late, almost. Now in California there are road laws which state that & motorist must stop when a pedestrian is in & cross- walk Hence Barney's first impulse was to stop, which he did so suddenly that he drove stomach against the gteering wheel and knocked his wind out The figure that had caused all the trouble—and a neat little figure it was, arra an off-the-face hat (whatever that is) —this neat little figure materialized out of the orange sun rays and became a terrifically incensed young lady. “I suppose,” she said, “you're going to make the excuse that you didn't see me?” Being out of air Barney couldn't answer. He gaped and gogaled *80." she said, “you won't talk, eh? Well, do you know what I'm going to de? I'm going to call a policeman.” Barney recovered his breath. “Hop in.” he said, “and I'll take you to th police station.” Obviously she hadn't expected such a smart answ Nor had she expected that the young man who had almost run her down was so handsome and had such an engaging way about him “You can take me to the beauty shop,” she said, getting in. “I'm 10 minutes late.” ARNEY grinned in relief. Then he called for a showdown. 've known you a month. I've been out with you five times. It may sound silly, but I do love you. Will you marry me?” She thought a moment. “It will probably sound just as silly to you. But the answer is yes. But wait, there's a hitch.” “I was afraid there would be. Nothing good ever happened to me.” “T'll explain tomorrow.
