NEW YORK, July 13.—Convertibles and other bonds with a speculative ap- peal retreated in quiet dealings today, with some showing losses of 1 to more than 2 points in late trading. The main list, however, held the Zround won in the mid-year recovery, although there was no further in- clination to bid up prices. A number of foreign issues did better than do- mestic loans and recorded gains rang- ing to around 2 points Down fractions to 2 points were Southern Railway 4s. Youngstown | Sheet & Tube 3!2s, Studebaker 6s, International Telephone 5s. Great Northern 4s, New York Central 5s and Alleghany 5s stamped. A little higher were Copper 4!»s. Bethlehem Steel 3%s and Western Union 5s. Polish loans were up around 1 to 2 points in ex- tension of a previous advance. Japan 51,5 lost & point in fairly active deal- ings as bond traders watched war re- ports from the Far East, but the 6!.s held a small gain. NEW YORK, July 13.—Wall Street kept an eye on North China, where Japanese-Chinese tension was re- ported growing today, but the ef- fect of the trouble appeared small in financial quarters. The yen was quoted at 28.94 cents, down 0.01 of a cent from yesterday's close. There were few offerings at that price. Japanese dollar bonds were unchanged on small transactions in the stock exchange. Bankers were advised the Govern- ment would support the yen near its present level should any pressure ap- pear. In recent weeks Japan has shipped many millions of dollars in gold to New York and London to de- fend the international value of its currency. Brokers said the crisis so far had exerted no influence on the stock market. INVESTING COMPANIES NEW YORK. July 13 (P.— Becurlty Deaisis” Associntion 07 YO (Noon quotations.) Advancing for the third congecu- | tive week, the wholesale commodity price index compiled by the National Fertilizer Association in the week ended July 10 rose to a point near the highest level recorded this year. The index last week was 88.6, based on the 1926-1928 average as 100, com- pared with the highest point for the year and the recovery period of 88.7 In the preceding week the index was 88.3, a month ago it was 86.9 and a year ago 78.7. Rising prices for farm products were primarily responsible for the con- tinued upturn in the index. Higher quotations for cotton, grains and live stock raised the index of farm product prices to the highest point reached since recovery began in 1933. Slight advances were also registered during | the week by the indexes representing the prices of textiles and metals. A reversal of the downward trend in steel scrap prices was partlally respon- sible for the upturn in the metal price index. Foodstuff price trends were mixed | e it REAL ESTATE LOANS RESIDENCE and 5% SMALL BUSINESS FRED T. NESBIT PROPERTIES. 1010 VERMONT AYE. Although the num- ber of commodities included in the Broup which advanced exceeded the number of declines, rather sharp re- cessions in certain heavily weighted Items resulted in the index remaining unchanged for the week. Lower quo- tations for lumber and lime caused a moderate drop in the building material index. This index has now lost most of the rise which occurred from the first of the year through the early part of May. Twenty-eight price series included in the index advanced during the week and 18 declined; in the preceding week there were 37 advances and 18 declines; in the second preceding week there were 32 advances and 29 declines. Our modern business structure is so complex that it could not function without banks. As a simple illustration, more than go% of all the business in this country is carried on by pay- ments with bank checks. Banks are the active hub of practically all business and financial transactions. Day in and day out they render useful, needed finan- cial services. They furnish depositors with a safe, convenient place to keep money. They make loans to local borrowers of business ability and integrity. They furnish employ- ment to local people and aid in making it possible for other activities to do so. They participate—directly and indirectly—in civic enterprises. Among the many elements essential to the success of a bank our officers and directors believe the most important is soundness built on the enduring foundation of community usefulness.
