- ~ DAILY SHORT STORY SURPRISE By Barbara Ann Benedict. ‘OW, there’s a girl,” said Jim Venn, pointing over the heads of the dancers, “who’'s worth writing home about.” Rod Harris nod- ded. “One in & million,” he agreed. “It's a pity she eouldn’t have done better when she picked a husband for herself.” “Marrfed Tom Walton, didn’t she? What's wrong with him?” “He doesn't ap- preciate the prize he won when Betty accepted him. Take tonight, for ex- ample. He hasn't danced with her once. He acts like he'd never met the girl.” Jim eased away from the stag line and found a seat for himself in a remote corner. Strangely, the things that Rod had said were an accurate interpretation of his own thoughts. Long ago when Jim and Betty were at high school age, they had been swéethearts. Remembrance of that association was a cherished memory with Jim. Now as he reflected upon the experiences and adventures which he had undergone since leaving Maple- wood, he told himself for the ‘wun- dredth time that nothing in his life | had been much finer or more beautiful | than those sweetheart days with Betty Rowe, And now Betty was married! Well, the had expected that. He had ex- pected it even though down deep in his heart he had half hoped that she wouldn't be. | He smiled wistfully as he recalled | his disappointment. Of course it was silly and unreasonable. After all, | gou couldn’t expect a girl as sweet and lovely and as fine as Betty Rowe to remain single. After the first shock of it Venn hadn't been wholly displeased. Tom Walton was about as fine a youth as Maplewood had to offer. He had been in their class | at high school, and since graduation had become a credit to his town and | his family. Jim remembered what Rod Harris had just told him. Well, you couldn't tell about men these days. * ok K K ’I‘HE thing was puzzling. Jim sank back in his chair and began to brood. ‘Could it be that Betty and Tom were happy? Could it be that Tom had tired of his charming young | wife? It seemed incredible. And yet it was obvious that Tom had other interests besides his wife. | During the week that Jim had been in Maplewood he had seen a good | deal of the pair, and not once had he | witnessed any demonstration of af- fection between them. Unconsciously Jim clenched his fists. If Tom were making her un- happy . . . A young couple was dancing on the other side of the palm tree. It was a dreamy waltz and the lights had been dimmed. Jim couldn’t dis- tinguish the figures clearly, but he knew that the girl was Betty. Her | head was resting on her parmer'sl shoulder. She seemed happy nnd‘l ARCHBISHOP APOLOGIZES IN PILSUDSKI DISPUTE Bquabble Over Removal of Re- mains of “Strong Man" Be- lieved to Have Ended. By the Assoclated Press. KRAKOW, Poland, July 8—The eonflict between the government and | the archbishop of Krakow over lhe‘ transfer of Marshal Josef Pilsudski’s | body from Krakow Cathedral to a nearby tower was believed to have been settled yesterday vhen the arch- bishop apologized. Two prelates were dispatched by the | archbishop to Gyndia with a letter | of apology to President Ignace Mos- | cicki. It was understood the govern- ment regarded the letter as satisfac- tory and expressed hope the incident was thus ended. The Senate and Chamber had asked the president Tuesday to call| @ special session to deal with the dispute, which grew out of removal last month of the body of Poland's former “strong man.” ‘The archbishop then said the trans- fer was made because the crypt was too damp and small to accommodate visitors. Catholic sources denied the move was made because of the then pending visit of King Carol of Ru- mania, head of the Rumanian Greek Orthodox Church. | Brain Twizzlers BY PROF. J. D. FLIN' They say that figures never lie, aithough they can often be made to whisper quite unintelligibly. At any rate, many unique and entertaining problems come from such arrange- ments as the one we have today. Divide 32 into four parts so that if you add 3 to the first part, subtract 3 from the second part, multiply the third part by 3 and divide the fourth part by 3, the answer in each case is the same. ‘There you have it, and what have you? A headache, maybe, but think of the satisfaction in proving your mind so agile. (Answer on Page C-10.) As Jim watched, the music stopped and Jim saw Bet- ty's partner take hold of the girl's arm and lead her quickly into the alcove, Jim was not naturally a curious person. Other peo- ple’'s business was their own. Ordi- narily he would haved moved away. But this situation was a little differ- ent. A lot differ- ent. He was sure that Betty and her partner had not seen him. The al- cove was only dimly lighted and the palm tree separated them. Without moving, he could witness quite clearly the scene that was being enacted. Instantly upon sitting down, Betty had reached up and drawn the man's face down to her own. He kissed her and held her close. Jim felt perspiration on his forehead. His fingernails dug .into his palms. And in, that moment something happened inside of him that shattered every beautiful illusion he had ever entertained toward life and women. * ok ok % O ONE, of all the people he knew, could have so completely changed his whole viewpoint as did Betty Walton in that moment when he saw her in the arms of another man, dis- loyal to her husband. He cursed under his breath and wished he was anywhere but there in the alcove. Of one thing he was sure. He had misjudged Tom Walton. It was Betty's fault. Betty had been the deceiver, the cause of their troubles. And Tom, good, noble Tom, had gone on without saying a word, cover- T Scene from Hawaii? (Copyright, An international aircraft show will be held in Milan, Italy, in October. Jim found himself on his feet. He wasn't thinking clearly; he was going in behind that palm tree and take that man by the scruff of the neck and tell him a few things. And then | he was going to talk to Betty. And he didn’t care if every one in the ball | room heard him either. It was high time her treachery was revealed, that the world knew, that Tom was ex- | onerated. Blindly enraged, Jim swept aside the palm leaves and stepped in front of the pair. With one hand he reached up, grabbed hold of the collar of Betty's partner, and jerked him about so that he could look into his face. Betty screamed.
