INANCLAL., OND. G. EXCHANGE Business Volume in Half Year Is Ahead of Like Period in 1936. BY EDWARD C. STONE. ‘Trading on the Washington Stock Exchange in the first half of 1937 revealed a substantial advance in vol- ume in both stocks and bonds, as compared with the first six months of 1936, according'to a survey of the two periods. The total dollar value of bond transactions on the Washington Ex- change so far this year totaled $357,- 000, while bond trading in the like 1936 period recorded a total valuation turnover amounting to $329,000. The most active bonds on the list in the first half of 1937 were Capital Traction 5s, which figured in a total turnover amounting*to $154,500. These bonds opened the year at 94!z, went : to 97, dropped to 87 and are now sell- ing at 88. Washington Gas Light 5s, 1960, stood next in popular sales amounting to $55,000, while Gas 5s, 1958, came second on the list with a $40,000 turnover. Washington Rail way & Electric 4s were next in or- der, followed by the Potomac Elec- tric Power 3';s. In the stock division, there was a turnover of 15,730 shares in the first half of the present year against slightly more than 11,000 shares in the like period a year ago. This is a refreshing gain. The largest per share trading was in Real Estate Mortgage & Guaranty pre- ferred, 6.472 shares changing owner- ship. The dollar value of these sales was much lower than in most other issues, as the transactions were made at and between 6': and 47, a share. During the six months 2,854 shares of Capital Transit stock changed ownership. This stock opened 1937 ut 14'2, rose to 16, then dropped to BY2, and ended the half year at 10'%. Among the high-priced issues, Wash- ington Railway & Electric preferred fed all the others, more than 1,257 shares ohanging ownership, with re- cent sales taking place around 111. Mergenthaler Linotype is way up the list in amount of activity, sales in the six months reaching 1,306 | shares, the stock closing the half- gear period at 41, a new low mark for 1937. Sales in the same period in Lanston Monotype reached 368 shares, the stock now moving at 80, after reaching 100 at one time this year. Bank stocks have given a good ac- pount of themselves so far in 1937 Demand has been good, and on the whole prices have remained firm. Members of the exchange are much pleased with business during the first half year and look for it to continue. President James M. Johnston and all his associates are cheerful on the coutlook. Bank Declared Dividend. Directors of the Washington Loan & Trust Co., meeting late yesterday, declared a quarterly dividend of 2 per cent a share on the outstanding stock, payable August 1, to stockhold- ers of record on July 23. Directors of' the John H. Wilkins Co., coffee merchants, lLave declared a 4 per cent semi-annual dividend on the outstanding preferred stock and a dividend of $1.50 a share on the common stock, both dividends being | payable July 15. ‘The Texas Corp. is announcing group life insurance and pensions for | approximately 26,000 employes in 4 States. The premium will run to ap- proximately $3,000,000 annually. Em- ployes will contribute part of the cost. Travelers, Aetna Life and Equita- ble Life each carry one-third of the risk. 3 State and municipal financing for the month of June aggregated $107,- 359,546 as compared with $118,092,- 250 in June, 1936, according to the Daily Bond Buyer. The total for the first six months of 1937 is $618.904.- 915 as compared with $634,748,325 for the same period last year. Banks Get New Legal List. All banks in the city have been turnished by the head office of the District Bankers' Association with the new list of legal investments for trust funds which was prepared by Theo- dore Coggswell, register of wills, in| conjunction with the local bar and | bankers' associations and group of trust experts. The new ruling on these investments became effective on July 1 and is of great value to all dnvestment institutions in the city. The leading investment firms in the Capital have made the new legal list available to clients, several mailing them direct to their customers. The dist has already received a great deal f most favorable comment. Members of the District of Colum- | bia Life Underwriters’ Association are taking great interest in “Life Insur- ance Speaks for Itself,” by M Albert Linton, president of the American Actuarial Society. Mr. Linton is also & member of the special advisory council recently named by the Social Becurity Board to aid in the con- ederation of the future of the old-age pension plans. Winthrop G. Batch- elder, an official in the local associa- tion, considers the author answers recent attacks on insurance unusually well. Investment Firm Changes Name. ‘The investment firm of D. H. Mc- Knew & Co. announced tollay that the concern has changed its name to McKnew, Fairfax & Co. This firm has been a member of the Washington Btock Exchange for a considerable time and was founded by Donald H. McKnew. The New York correspond- ents are members of the New York Btock Exchange, Dobbs & Co. Mergenthaler Lintotype was much stronger today than when it closed the first half year, 15 shares sell- ing on the Washington Stock Exchange nt 43} Lanston sold at 91, and ‘Washington Railway & Electric pre- ferred at 110%;. Washington Gas Light stock opened ot 781 and closed at 78 on a 30-share turnover, Capital Transit came out at 10%. Bond trading was confined to Washington Gas 5s, 1960, 115'4. The value of orders booked for air- conditioning systems and equipment in May were valued at $6,472,804, com- pared with $4,650,681 in the same month of last year, the Department of Commerce reported. For the five-month period from January to May these orders ' were valued at $31,420,627, compared with $16,703,669 for the corresponding period of last year, it was reported. ‘Wholesale Trade Value Up. Value of wholesale trade increased noticeably in May, 1937, from May, 1936, and collections on accounts re- ceivable were made at & higher rate over this period, according to reports of wholesalers in the monthly joint study of the National Association of Credit Men and the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerte.
