NEW YORK, July 8.—Production of electricity in the United States for the week .ended July 3 was 2,238,268,000 kilowatt hours, a de- crease of 0.1 of 1 per cent from last week but an increase of 10.3 per cent over the same week a year ago, the Edison Electric Institute re- ported today. The decline, which was contrasea- sonal, carried the Associated Press in- dex of electric power production down to 120.1 from 120.8 the pre- vious week. The index, which is ad- justed for seasonal and long-term trend, stood at 113.9 a year ago. The range for recent years follows: 1937. 1936. 1935. 1934. 1933. NEW YORK, July 8—The feature of this week’s report on bank clearings, issued today, was the decline in the total for the outside cities from & year ago, the first such decrease reported since the week of September 9, 1936. The aggregate for the country as a whole also displayed a slight drop from last year, although showing u gain over the week preceding. Bank clearings for 22 leading cities of the United States for the week | ended Wednesday, July 7, as reported | to Dun & Bradstreet, Inc., aggregated $6,042.812,000, as compared with $6,- 079,098,000 for the like week of 1938, or a decrease of 0.6 per cent. Ford to Construct $500,000 Addition To Norfolk Plant Special Dispatch to The Btar. DEARBORN, Mich., July 8.—Plans for a $500,000 expansion of the Ford Tidewater branch assembly plant at Norfolk, Va.. were announced at the Ford home offices here. The expansion will permit employe ment at peak of some 250 more work- ers and increase plant capacity by 50 cars daily to 400 cars daily, the an- nouncement said. It will also provide a dock and other facilitles for handling parts and mae terial shipped from the Ford plant here for use in assembly into Ford V-8 cars and trucks. The Ford No.‘olk plant at present has no facilities for receiving or dis patching shipments by water. Cars and trucks manufactured there are sent overland 10 mil*s to the Norfolk | Army supply base, where they are loaded on Ford ships for transport. When the new dock is completed the built-in units can be loaded directly at the plant, which lies some 7 miles up the Elizabeth River from Hampton Roads.
