LOAN AND INVESTMENT TOTAL DROPS SHARPLY By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, July 8.—Total loans and investments of Federal Reserve member banks in leading centers dipped sharply in the week ended June 30. The downturn reflected a further drop in bank holdings of Government bonds and a 31 per cent reduction in loans to banks, financial eircles said. Loans and in 101 cities reported by the Federal . Reserve Board, compared as follows: Week ended June 30..$22.290.000,000 | Previous week___ = 22111000000 Same period last year__ 22,619.000,000 LONG TERM Mortgage Loans Monthly Lower grades slow | DEMAND STRONG IN STEEL INDUSTRY Consumption High in Most Groups Except Motors. Scrap Advances. By the Associated Press. NEW YORX, July 8.—Steel cone sumption continues high in most im- portant divisions except the automoe bile industry, Iron Age reported to« day. Bright spots in the steel situation, the survey added, are indications of a revival of buying of railroad equip- ment and higher scrap steel prices. “The steel companies against which C. L O. activities have been directed have gradually been getting back to near-normal operation,” the review stated. “Only the Indiana Harbor plant of the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. re- mains completely idle, a blast furnace at its SBouth Chicago works having re sumed operation. At Youngstown the company is operating at 90 per cent, & 40 per cent rise from last week. “Republic Steel Corp. is operating its Youngstown district plants at an average of 60 per cent, and its Cor- rigan-McKinney plant in Cleveland, which resumed work Tuesday, is now at 50 per cent, with a higher rate | expected next week. “The Cambria Works of Bethlehem Steel Co. at Johnstown, Pa., are oper- ating at the rate in effect prior to its strikes. The Inland Steel Co., which | reopened its plant July 1 on the basis | of an arrangement with the Governor of Indiana, is back on full-time pro= duction. “The second half of the year be gins under favorable conditions exe cept for strike difficulties. Although new business continues to decline, the rate of consumption is high in nearly all major lines except the automobile industry—where fresh buying during the next few weeks may reverse the present downward trend in orders. Steel backlogs are still substantial in a number of products, including tin plate, sheets, plates, structural shapes, oil-country pipe and pig iron, assuring a high July operating rate, “There are signs of a revival of buying of railroad equipment, as some car-building shops approach the com= pletion of their present orders, “Steel scrap prices have advanced 50 cents a ton at Pittsburgh and Philadelphia and have strengthened elsewhere, chiefly because of the breaking up of the steel strikes. The Iron Age scrap composite price has advanced to $17.42 from $17.08, the first upward revision in 14 weeks. Contrariwise, Connelisville coke has declined 15 cents a ton on the furnace grade and 25 cents on the foundry grade.” U. S. TREASURY NOTES.
