BY EDWARD C. STONE. Bank clearings in Washington on June 30, 1937, in the 22 banks totaled $308,972,682.03, it was learned in the financial district today following the call issued by the controller of the eurrency, J. F. T. O'Connor, asking for the condition of all banks in the Capital and all national banks in the United States. Aggregate deposits in Washington showed a drop of $32,262,831.23 since the call three months ago, on March 31, 1937. Deposits on that date totaled $341,235,513.26. Bankers assigned the falling off in deposits here to two chief reasons, withdrawals from the larger banks by “country banks” to meet the Reserve Board's requirements for larger re- serves at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, and to heavy temporary withdrawals in connection with the personal tax in the District. While deposits here were off for the three months, they revealed a gain of $2,558,937.12 over the call a year ago, on June 30, 1936. Sales of new passenger automobiles in the fifth district in May and the first five months of this year scored advances over the like periods in 1936, although. in Washington alone they were not up to last year's marks, the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond states in its latest review. The num- ber of new cars registered in the whole area in May was 25,795 or 3.2 per cent better than a year ago and in the five | months 109,530 or 15.9 per cent ahead of the like 1936 period. \ Registration of new cars in Wash- ington totaled 3,179 in May, a drop of 13.3 per cent from May 1936 and 14,- 868 in the five months, a decrease of 9.8 per cent compared to the same months last year. Maryland reported 5,179 new registrations in May, a gain of 4.5 per cent and 20,809 for the five months, an increase of 17.6 per cent. Virginia had 5,459 registrations in May, up 1.5 per cent and 23,101 in the | five months, a notable gain of 13.2| per cent. Turning to construction, the Rich- | mond Bank states that building in the | fifth district continues to expand, | especially in residential work near the cities. Permits in 31 cities in May | ware estimated to cost $10,178,457, the | highest monthly figure reported since | April, 1930 and 57.5 per cent higher than in May, 1936. Contracts actually awarded totaled $24,030,000, only 2.6 per cent ahead of 1936 when the figures included several large Govern- ment projects. Building Contracts Mount. ‘The Richmond Bank says that con- struction contracts awarded in Wash- ington in April totaled $4,854,700, a gain of 97.3 per cent over April, 1936. Maryland reported contracts totaling $5,269,100, up 33.6 per cent, while Virginia contracts amounted to $10,- 275,700, an increase of 96.3 per cent. Included in these sensational gains was an advance of 60 per cent in West Virginia, 40 per cent in North Caro- lina and 99.2 per cent in South Caro- lina. Reviewing banking conditions up to Sune 15 summing up reports from 41 member banks, the Richmond analysis states that during the month invest- ment rose $19,111,000, while demand deposits declined $9,121,000 and bor- rowing from other banks dropped $4, 600,000 in the regularly reporting banks, other changes in the statement being relatively immaterial. In com- parison with figures on June 17 last year, figures on June 16 this year showed increases of $59,205,000 in loans, $32,408,000 in reserve balance af the Reserve bank, and $56,931,000 in demand deposits, while investments in securities decreased $12,652,000 dur- ing the year. Of these, three banks corrected their practices, four closed and one was absorbed by another bank. The remaining cases were pending at the end of the year. Ohairman Leo T.
