C, TUESDAY, JULY 6, 1937 VITALITY SHOW BY TRADE INDICES Steel, Motors, Power and Freight Loadings Hold at Steady Levels. By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, July 6.—From diverse sections of trade and industry have come indications of continued busi- ness vitality, analysts noted today. The statistical “big four"—steel, motors, power and carloadings—have recently turned in comparatively steady performances, although symp- toms of Summer slackening have been present. However, as some see it, behavior of statistics covering these four major flelds must be studied constantly in the light of trends ruling in other and less spectacular sectors of business. Recent grist from the business news mill bears witness to improvement in miscellaneous divisions. A random selection of brighter items follows: Scrap steel, traditional barometer of the steel industry, has been marked up 50 cents a ton at Pittsburgh. American Airlines, Inc., reported a 92 per cent increase in passengers flown in and out of New York in June compared with the like month of 1936. New York Telephone Co. reported | | a gain of 4,085 stations in June, com- pared with a loss of 1,745 in June a year ago. Secretary of Labor Perkins an- nounced that non-agricultural in- | dustries employed 34,700,000 persons | |during may, an increase of 316,000 | over April, 600,000 over March, and nearly 2,000,000 above May, 1936, Currency in circulation, yard-stick 000 to $6,448,000,000 in the week ended June 30, a spurt bearing witness to preparations for both the holiday and the first full swell of vacation spend- ing. PARIS, July 6.—The Bank of France reduced its rediscount rate from 6 to 5 per cent today. ‘The reduction war porsible because the “floating franc,” cut loose frem its vestrictions by Camille Chautemps’ new government last week, steadied with foreign exchange. Interest on loans on securities was lowered from 7 to 6 per cent, and interest on 30-day loans was down from 6 to 5 per cent. The bank’s regents. took the action reducing the rates after the franc had showed steady at the market opening at 2595 to the dollar, strengthening later to 25.75. A decree of the ministry of finance, published under the full powers law recently granted the Chautemps gov- ernment to save French finances, ordered the reopening of commodity markets. The decree suspended the closing orders issued June 21 at the height of the fiscal crisis. INVESTING COMPANIES NEW YORK. July 8 (#.—New York Security Dealers’ Association. NEW YORK, July 6 () —Water | Service Companies, Inc., has callec for FINANCIAL OUTLOOK GLOUDED BYLABOR TROUBLE Threat of Further Serious Disturbances Calls for Cautious Policies. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, July 6.—In its week- ly summary of the general business situation, the Standard Statistics Co. of New York currently comments as follows: “Business activity is being main- tained at reasonably satistactory levels, but the near-term outlook continues to call for caution. While the back of the steel strike appears to have been broken, threats of further serious disturbances this Summer, the un- settled political situation abroad and prospects that the administration will press its various reform measures at the present session of Congress are likely to continue to depress senti- ment. “Developments in the steel strike have been encouraging in that, for the first time. the coercive and unlawful tactics of the C. I. O. have been suc- cessfully combated, at least tem- porarily, by industrial managements. An aroused public opinion was ob- viously responsible for the setback, and it is possible that the strikes in the steel plants marked the turning point in the entire movement. However, further disturbances threaten in nu- 1 merous lines and the administration is still definitely pro-C. I. O., despite the growing resentment of the public. | “It is impossible, of course, to fore- cast labor’s next move. It is con- ceivable that the C. I. O. will continue to press its fight against the steel com- panies, insist upon unreasonable con- cessions from General Motors and follow later in the Summer with a drive against Ford. “On the other hand, the mush- room growth of the C. I. O. has pre- sented many problems to its leaders. Its members have been getting out of hand and expenses of conducting strikes have been heavy. It may be, therefore, that the labor leaders will consider 1t advisable to go slow over | the next few months in an alumpt to consolidate their position and to strengthen the internal structure of the organization before renewing the drive. Possibly the results of the meeting next November of the Amer- ican Federation of Labor, which is preparing for an active campaign against the C. I. O., will mark the real crisis. “In either event, it is difficult to view the labor outlook with equanim- ity. Eventually, legislation designed to place greater responsibilities on the unions will probably be enacted, but the possibilities of such a develop- ment at the present session of Con- gress are not favorable.” an Loans on Existing Properties 5% FIRST DEED OF TRUST ONLY GEORGE L.
