BACKGROUND— Monday morning the garroted bodies of three young girls were found in a wooded ravine near In- glewood, Calif. They had been at- tacked and murdered Saturday by a man who promised “to take them rabbit hunting.” By the Assoctated Press. INGLEWOOD, Calif., June 30.—A man, identified only as “Eddie the Sallor” by police, became suspect No. 1 today in the search for the slayer of the three little Inglewood girls. Re- wards totaling $3,500 spurred the hunt. “Eddie the Sailor,” police learned, almost succeeded in luring two more girls into his automobile Saturday— the day Madeline Everett, 7; her sister Melba, 9. and Jeannette Marjorie Stephens, 8, were slain. Lillian Popp, 11, told officers she and her cousin almost joined the three victims in what “Eddie the Sailor” represented was going to be a rabbit hunt in the hills. “When we reached the car, I kicked my cousin and reminded her, in whis- pers, what her mother had told her about going riding with a strange man,” Lillian said. “So we didn't go, but Melba and Jeannette and Made- line got into the car with the man.” Still Far From Solution. Authorities said the crimes were still far from solution. They know the kid- napings and murders were the work of a pervert. Released after being subjected to rigorous questioning was a young man closely resembling the overall- clad workman who last Friday asked Olive Everett, sister of two of the slain girls, to accompany him on a rabbit hunt. He had a sailor’s knot tatooed on his right arm. He wore & small, pointed mustache. Their bodies, ropes about their necks, were discovered in a deep ravine Monday. W. P. A. Workers Sought. Various children who play in the park know a man who has frequented it only as “Eddie the sailor.” Olive recalled the man once told her he had helped build the park swimming pool last year. Police found it was built by seven men as a W. P. A. project, and sought the seven for questioning. Law-enforcement agencies have been co-ordinated under direction of Sheriff Eugene Biscailuz of Los Angeles County. A crowd estimated at 800 persons City Hall last night, where suspects were being questioned. Insect Damage Great. Insects do $600.000,000 damage to crops in China every year, declares the Chinese ministry of industry, which is starting a war on insect pests. In Memortam. FREEMAN.
