BURGESS. HE days were long and bright | and hot. Taddy, the tiny son | of Old Mr. Toad, did all his resting and sleeping then. He | didn't move so much as a toe. Al-| ways he was under something where the rays of jolly, round. bright Mr. Sun could not reach him. Not always was he wholly comfortable, but he managed to keep his skin from dry- ing out too much, and that was the important thing. In the cool of the evening, when the Black Shadows had crept across the Green Meadows, Taddy came out to hunt for mos- quitoes and other insects, and then to continue his journey out into the Great World. It was the same with an army of other little Toads who had left the Smiling Pool with Taddy. They had been growing fast, had those little Toads. So little by little they moved on across the Green Meadows, becoming more scattered the farther they got. when all were hopping about in pur- suit of insects it seemed as if the ground was covered with them. At last they reached the edge of Farmer Brown's door yard, and there, as jolly, round, bright Mr. Sun began his daily climb up in the blue, blue aky, they hid in all sorts of places and under all sorts of things. Some had crossed over to Farmer Brown's house and several of these found shelter under the doorstep, a dark, cool and very comfortable place. Mother Brown did a washing that morning and hung the clothes out to dry. Not a Toad, big or little, was to be seen anywhere. That after- noon, after the clothes were dry, & sudden shower came up. Mother Brown ran out to take in the clothes as the first big drops came splashing down. She hastily gathered up an armful and turned to run back to the house. Then, just for a second, she paused in something very like dismay. There were little Toads hop- ping about between her and the doorstep. 8he glanced hastily to one side, only to find little Toads there. She looked to the other side, with the same result—little Toads hop- ping this way, little Toads hopping that way, little Toads hopping every way. In the hurry she was in it was with the greatest difficulty that she avoided stepping on one. The shower was one of those sud- den hard showers that last but a few minutes. By the time 1t was over the whole dooryard was alive with little Toads. Anyway, that is the way it seemed to Mother Brown when she looked out. They were in the grass. They were in the drive- way. When she went to a front window and looked out she could see them hopping all over the road. A car couldn't possibly have been driven along that road without crushing dozens of them. “My land!” exclaimed Mother Brown.' “I have heard that Toads sometimes rain down, but I never be- leved it before.” “And you don't believe it now,” said Farmer Brown, who happened to come in just in time to hear that remark. “I do, too!” she declared. “If they didn’t rain down, where did they all come from? At the beginning of the shower I ran out to get the clothes from the line and there wasn't a Toad in sight. By the time I started back for the house they were every- where.” “Didn’t any hit you in falling, did there?” asked Farmer Brown. ‘No,” admitted Mother Brown. “Didn’t see any bouncing off the roofs of the buildings, did you?” con- tinued Farmer Brown. “No,” was the somewhat reluctant admission again. . “Of course, you didn't,”” said he. “Those little Toads didn’t rain down. They arrived during the night and were hiding under all sorts of things, anything that would cover them from the sun. The first drops of rain brought them out.” (Copyrisht, 10879 THAT CaN WAIT-- GEE !
