Diorama Enthusiasts Busy Both Boys and Girls Are Interested in Sunday Star’s Cut-outs. These young persons are admiring a finished diorama por- traying “The Creeping Wall,” which has been prepared by the artist for the world museum page in next Sunday’s paper. Creeping Wall” and shows a mother polar bear and her | two cubs looking down into a valley | in Greenland, where a huge glacier | forms a blue wall. Glaciers are rivers of ice. You know what happens when rain falls on fields and hilitops, the water comes together in little rivu- lets to make the brooks which form larger streams and eventually rivers. If it continues raining the rivers rush toward the sea in great floods, carry- ing everything movable with them Trees are uprooted and houses and barns float away. If you can imagine the same thing happening in Arctic countries where it is too cold to rain, you will see how glaciers are made. Snow falls| on the hills vear by year. It is packed down into deep drifts by its own weight. The Arctic Summer is too short for the sun to melt all the snow. Perhaps vou've seen snow drifts At the end of a long Winter which do | not look like snow any more because the flakes have pressed together so tightly that they form a granular fee. This is exactly what happens to the Arctic snow EXT Sunday's World Museum Diorama In The Star is “The Snow Becomes Solid. And as years pass and the weight becomes greater this snow ice becomes more solid The valleys are filled with it, and finally, just as in a flooded river, this great mass starts moving. It has become a glacier—a river of ice, and it moves down the valley to the sea sweeping everything movable before 1t In this case the movable objects are not houses and barns or trees, but rocks sometimes bigger than houses. The glacier gouzes out the sides of hills until the hilltops topple down in avalanches on top of tae glacier. The uneven valley bed. which, of ecourse. is solid rock. causes this ice river to crack into deep fissures and crevices. Some of these extend all the way from the bottom to the top. And the landslides falling into them bring soil and rock to be packed tight and later dumped into the sea. Not all | glaciers, therefore, are clear blue ice, but some are mottled and gray with the stones and earth they carry. The largest glaciers are found in the Arc- tic and Antarctic regions. but there are also glaclers in New Zealand. Northern India and the Alps. And there are even some in our own United States. Great Lakes Formed. Thousands of years ago a great glacier covered most of North Amer- fca—scooped out the hollows of our Great Lakes and most of the present | river beds. In some places this wall stretched across what is now the United States—a creeping wall a mile | | away into the sea or two high. When it melted it left great mounds of gravel, ground up | from huge boulders, and hills of fine rock dust. Later swirling winds car- peted our great plains with this dust | to depths of more than a hundred | feet. The duststorms of recent years | have laid bare thefe deposits of fine glacial dust, which is again being blown over America In a later diorama we will something about this great glacier and the odd animals that lived in America at that time. But next Sun- day's diorama shows a present-day glacier in action and explains how masses of ice fall from the creeping wall to become icebergs and float tell DIES IN NORTH CAROLINA Dr. Nellis W.
