The normal play of the ace and king of hearts was out of the question, as this would remove dummy's re-entry and the hand would be made then only if one of the opponents held the doubleton jack of spades. Most players would have played over to the ace of hearts, then back to the queen and then have played the king-queen of spades before re- turning to dummy's ace of hearts. However, as both spades and hearts would have to break, there would be no advantage in this line of attack. The only other play, and the correct one, was adopted by Mr. Vanderbilt. Vis- ualizing the possibility of west's hold- ing the singleton jack of hearts, Mr. Vanderbilt played his queen. When this turned out to be the case, he promptly played his king and queen of spades, then played a small trump to dummy, but did not-play the third round of trumps. Instead, he simply played through east until that player trumped. Mr. Vanderbilt then over- WEDNESDAY, JUNE 2, 1937. trumped, drew east's remaining trump and was able to run off the rest of his spades.
