NEW MEXICO CITY AWAITSNEW FLOOD Lowland Residents Evac- uated as Second, Higher Wall of Water Approaches. By the Associnted Press. ROSWELL, N. Mex., June 1.—Resi- dents anxiously awaited the Hondo River crest today, which they feared would inundate the city for the second time in four days. A wall of water 8 feet higher than that which caused a major flood last Baturday was reported sweeping down tfie Hondo from the West. National Guardsmen, sworn in by the Mayor as “auxiliary police,” pa- trolled the streets, under command of Adjt. Gen. Russell C. Charlton. Police warned residents to draw a supply of drinking water against the possibility mains would be broken. Lowland dwellers fled their homes. Three miles north of the city the Berendo River overflowed, dozens of families from their homes along its banks An earlier flood at Tucumcari cost seven lives Roswell residents, amply warned of the approaching crest, labored all night to combate the new menace. The War Department disclosed to- day that because of the Spanish civil war it is sending Army officers to Mexico instead of Spain as language students. Army officers, particularly those TAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, TUESDAY, slated to become Spanish instructors at West Poinf, have been sent to Spain for many years, but it was deemed advisable to omit that country this year. The War Department also sends language students to France, China and Japan. Some officials expressed the view it might be advisable, in view of the administration’s *‘good-neighbor” pol- icy, to send all Spanish language students to South and Central Amer- ican countries in the future.
