The instrument enables eye special- ists to look into the cornea, or front part of the eye, which protects the lens and through which flows the aqueous fluid. The queer forms seen may be evidence of pathological con- ditions, as described by Dr. Robert Von Der Heydt of Chicago. The “warts” in the eye are among | the many signs of increasing age at- forded by the organ of vision. They are not “warts” in the same sense | as those which appear on the fingers, but are dark-colored nodules which | appear on one of the glagssy mem- | branes which make up the cornea, due to excessive secretion from the cells. Through the cornea, Dr. Von Der | Heydt explained, there is a continuous circulation of the watery fluid of the eye which is secreted from the blood. This is governed by a peculiar mecha- nism. The cornea, exposed to the outside, is cooled to the temperature of its surroundings, while the iris, protected behind the cornea, retains the normal heat of the body. ’I‘hus| there is set up a heat gradient which | keeps the flow going on continuously | during the life of the individual When an infection is present, white blood cells—leucosytes, lymphocytes and plasma cells—get into this cor- | neal circulation and tend to deposit themselves on the back of this part of the eye. Operations Described. There, Dr. Von Der Heydt said, is | the only possible place to see these | | cells, which have most of the char-| acteristics of individual living animals, although part of the great “state” of | the human body, crawling around.| Clumps can be located which have | changed their position a short time ! afterward. The kind of animal is tmportant for diagnostic purposes. Leucocytes mean an acute infection, lymphoc)les" a chronic infection, and plasma cells are one of the earliest evidences of tuberculosis. Thus Dr. Von Der Heydt spoke of “leucocyte storms” in the eye, which come with some sud- den infection and which leave queer patterns like spider webs, stars, etc. Delicate surgical operations on the | evelid. which often is disfigured by scars and infections, were described by Dr. Edmund B. Dr. Spaeth told how large scars on the eyelid can be repaired by cutting a long, narrow strip of skin from the forehead, leaving the end attached Jjust at the corner of the eye and sew- ing the strip into the eyelid hole, Where the scar has been cut away.
