HELP AND SITUATIONS. MISCELLANEOUS « B-13 —h——_—_——_———_—‘—_—_—‘_‘————————m \.F. 6. E.LODGES TOPUSH PROTEST Six “Liberal” Units Ignore Stengle Warning—Meeting Date Selected. Despite & warning from Charles I. Stengle, president of the American Federation of Government Employes, six “liberal” lodges are going ahead With plans for a mass meeting in pro- test against the current economy drive in the Government. Tentatively, June 8 has been chosen 88 the date, it was said today, but this will depend on whether speakers can be obtained and other arrange- ‘ments made. The six lodges have formed a tem- porary committee headed by Arthur Stein of W. P. A. and have announced their intention of enlisting support from other workers’ groups “to pro- tect their job standards.” A statement from this committee yesterday said it “indorsed the strong stand against so-called economy leg- islation taken by Willlam Green, president of the American Federation of Labor, at the Maryland-District convention” this past week. It also asserted that the six lodges “have at no time considered withdrawing from the American Federation of Govern- ment Employes or the American Fed- eration of Labor.” The lodges in the present move are from Labor, Interstate Commerce, Agriculture, General Accounting, Re- settlement and Works Progress. They moved to act independently Wwhen national headquarters of the A. F. G. E. refused to conduct a mili- tant campaign against the economy move. In his warning, Stengle told the 8ix to “cease and desist” from their campaign, pointing out they are sub- Ject to suspension otherwise. He said | their plan “is deemed inimical to the best interests of the American Feder- ation of Government Employes,” and that he proposed to ask the Executive Committee—which has the power to suspend—to consider the present sit- uation. The announcement from the six that they do not intende to leave the A. F. of L. came concurrently with reports that some employe groups have made overtures for affiliation with the Committee for Industrial Organization. Brain Twizzlers BY PROF. J. D. FLINT. HERE is a grand problem which depends purely on reasoning and has no tricks. A king’s prime minister died and he wanted to appoint a new one from three able men who were in his service. He decided to test their powers of reasoning, so he took them into & room where he had two cans of paint, one red and one blue. He said to the men, whom we shall call Duke, Lord and Count, “I am going to blindfold each of you and then paint either a blue or a red circle on each of your foreheads. When the blindfolds are removed, if you see & red circle on either of the other two foreheads raise your hand. JThe first who knows definitely the oolor of the circle on his own fore- bead may lower his hand, tell me his sne of reasoning and if correct he will be my new prime minister.” After blindfolding them he painted & red circle on all three foreheads snd when the blindfolds were removed each raised his hand because he saw, of course, two red circles. After sev- eral minutes Duke lowered his hand and said, “I have a red circle on my forehead.” He was right and be- ecame prime minister. What was his reasoning?
