A bronze plaque, commemorating 3 officers and 23 enlisted men who lost their lives in the sinking of the U. 8. S. President Lincoln by a Ger- man submarine on May 31, 1918, will be unveiled in the main lobby of the "Navy Department next Monday at 11 am. Accepting the plaque on behalf of the Navy will be Rear Admiral Adol- phus Andrews, chief of the Bureau o of Navigation. The plaque is the gift of the U. S. S. President Lincoln Club, which meets annually for & memorial dinner on the anniversary of the sink- ing of the vessel. This year the club will meet on the evening of Sunday, May 30, at the Willard Hotel. Har- vey D. Carter of New York is presi- dent of the club. Hit by Three Torpedoes. Comdr. P. W, Foote, U. S. N,, re- tired, now a rear admiral, commanded the vessel when the German torpedoes hit. Lieut. Comdr. W. L. Lind, on duty in the Office of Naval Intelli- gence, was executive officer of the ship at that time. Three German torpedoes struck the transport some 400 miles off the French coast, bound for the United States. Although there were 715 per- sons aboard, and she sank in 25 min- utes, all but 26 were saved. American destroyers picked up the survivors 18 hours later. Plaque Depicts Sinking Ship. ‘The plaque, which depicts the President Lincoln settling in the waves, with men in lifeboats pulling away from her, reads: “In memory of the men who gave their lives when the U. 8. TUSCUMBA, Mo, May 24 (®).— ‘Two men and a 12-year old girl were drowned yesterday when their oute board motor boat overturned in the Osage River at Kings Bluff, near Bagnell Dam. They were William Eiffert, 45, and Leslie Keeth, 35, both of Iberia, and Vera Cox of Richmond.
